“HEAVEN’S MUSIC IS WAITING AT YOUR DOOR”

Dear Friends in Christ:

There once was a German prince who wished to possess a Cremona violin and he offered a princely sum to anyone who would offer such to him.  For months he had no success.  Then one day an old man appeared at the castle with a worn violin case under his arm.  The servants at first refused to admit him to the prince, but he persisted and they finally agreed to bring word of the old man’s arrival to the prince.  For he told them to tell the prince:  “Heaven’s music is waiting at your door.”

The prince commanded that the old man come and appear before him.  The old man entered the room, went over to a nearby table and laid the shabby case on it.  He opened the case and took out a perfect violin.  Then he began to play and to create such marvelous music as to win the prince’s ardent praise.  The man was offered any price he cared to name for his beautiful violin, but the man only shook his head, saying, “No, sire, this violin may only be yours on condition that I pass my life within your house, and may use this instrument every day.”  And so it was that the prince accepted the violin on those terms.

Consider now this story as a parable.  In these next short weeks we will be hearing again the Christmas good news, especially in word and music, of God’s love come to us in the flesh of Jesus, God’s Son, Savior.  The message to us is that “Heaven’s music is waiting at your door.”  May we one and all, receive this Master Musician through the door of our hearts and homes, so that His beauty and joy may illuminate our lives.

We extend to you our personal wishes for a most blessed time of Advent preparation and of

Christmas celebration around this most gracious gift that God has given us.

Merry Christmas and a Most Blessed New Year!

MEN’S  ADVENT

BREAKFASTS

All male members of the parish and area communities are invited to gather in the Hayward Lutheran Fellowship Hall for four Tuesday mornings in the December season of Advent:  December 2, 9, 16, 23, at 6:45 a.m.

Pastor Malm and any others who wish to volunteer their cooking skills will serve up some hot pancakes and sausage, along with coffee, juice, milk, syrup, etc.  For about forty-five to fifty minutes, we will gather for some table fellowship to nourish  our bodies and share in conversation, including spending a few minutes to feast on God’s Word with a short devotional.  Those who need to do so can leave for their work duties and others are welcome to linger over another cup of coffee and more fellowship together.  If you so wish, you can donate a couple of bucks to cover the food costs.  Any donations gathered in excess of food costs will go towards a chosen community charity.

This is not just for members only.  This is for males, young and old.  This is a chance to invite friends, neighbors and relatives from surrounding churches and communities.  Come and enjoy the fellowship and the Word, as we prepare our hearts and minds for the Blessings of Christ’s Incarnation.             Call Pastor Malm at 373-8479 or 373-3966 to let us know if you will be attending so we know how many pancakes to make!

HONESTY, SINCERITY, TENDERNESS AND TRUST

It was the drama, the plot of a country song to which I was listening as I made my morning walk.  The couple was meeting at the restaurant, where, over a meal together the man was seeking to reconcile their relationship.  What did he need to do to regain her love, her heart?  She had written the words on a napkin and slid it over to him.  He opened it up and there were those four key words:  Honesty, sincerity, tenderness and trust.  That is what he would have to give and be towards her if that relationship were to go on and be a lasting relationship.

Honesty, sincerity, tenderness and trust – those are four key ingredients essential to any lasting relationship, whether it be applied to one of parent/child, or friendship or marriage.  One can even apply them to the business/customer relationship.  And of course, they can also be applied to our relationship with God, or God’s relationship with us.

Those four key words are all wrapped up in what God is all about, and so also what God then expects from us.  It gets at the heart of all that is proclaimed to us in the Ten Commandments, or in the Great Commandment:  You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength, and your neighbor as yourself.

As I listened to the drama and plot of that song, I thought that it would be quite easy to rearrange a couple of words and the scene so that it is Jesus or God Himself who is passing those words to me, to you, saying “This is what I need from you for this relationship to be a lasting one, for this is what I am giving to you – honesty, sincerity, tenderness and trust.”  Interesting, isn’t it?  That is really what we seek, desire, and yearn for in any relationship.  Deep down inside of us we know, we just know, that this is what it takes for any lasting relationship.  For it has to do also with integrity – the integrity of who we really are or hope to be – the integrity of a God of love.

Honesty, sincerity, tenderness and trust – we don’t fire on all four cylinders all the time, do we?  Our condition of sin and selfishness will dictate the misfires, the goofs, the times of straying away.  So there is always that time when God needs to have us come to HIS table where he can pass us his note of reminder to us that this is what he needs from us for this relationship to be a lasting one, for this is what he also gives to us.  That note of reminder comes to us in the form of bread and wine, flesh and blood, cross and empty tomb – honesty, sincerity, tenderness and trust.

Now, in this season of Advent and Christmas, this note is slipped to us across a table, and the table is in that setting of a cave-stable in David’s Town.  As we prepare our hearts to celebrate that great gift of God’s Love in Christ Jesus, let us come and sit at table with Him and be filled up to overflowing with that wonderful good news of honesty, sincerity, tenderness and trust.

ABOVE AND BEYOND

Your Congregation Council continues to express much thanks to you for the gifts you have given this year for the various ministries and programs we seek to support.  At the same time, we continue to express our concern for the welfare of the General Fund.  In order to make ends meet, we continue to borrow significantly from the Building Fund in order to keep bills paid through the General Fund.  This means that our giving to the General Fund needs to be significantly improved as we head into the final two months of our fiscal year.

Whenever a congregation enters into the kind of building program that we have undertaken during this last year, the General Fund always seems to suffer.  It is because we forget that, in our case, our giving to the Elevator or Handicapped Lift Fund needs to be “above and beyond” our regular giving to the General Fund, and not in place of it.

Because of that pattern of giving, we now have to ask one another to give “above and beyond” to the General Fund, so that this fund, along with the Building Fund, are not “handicapped” going into the future.

Please take these thoughts and concerns to heart as you consider your giving to your church in these next two months.  Thank you.

This is a story from the book Chicken Soup for Kids:

Coffee Soldiers

My mom is a first grade teacher.  It was around Christmas and all the kids were really hyper.  A little boy came into her room and put a coffee mug filled with toy soldiers on her desk.  She asked what it was for.  He said,  The best part of waking up is soldiers in your cup.”  Have a great day!

Out Of the Mouths of Children

One rainy afternoon I was driving along one of the main streets of town, taking those extra precautions necessary when the roads are wet and slick.  Suddenly, my son, Matthew, spoke up from his relaxed position in the front seat.  “Mom, I’m thinking of something.”   This announcement usually meant he had been pondering some fact for a while and was now ready to expound all that his seven-year-old mind had discovered.  I was eager to hear.

“What are you thinking?” I asked.  “The rain,” he began, “is like sin, and the windshield wipers are like God wiping our sins away.”

After the chill bumps raced up my arms I was able to respond.  “That’s really good, Matthew.”  Then my curiosity broke in.  How far would this little boy take this revelation?  So, I asked, “Do you notice how the rain keeps on coming?  What does that tell you?”  Matthew didn’t hesitate one moment with his answer.  “We keep on sinning and God just keeps on forgiving us.”

A DIFFERENT KIND OF PRAYER

Heavenly Father,

Help us remember that the jerk who cut us off in traffic last night is a single mother who worked nine hours that day and was rushing home to cook dinner, help with homework, do the laundry and spend a few precious moments with her children.

Help us to remember that the pierced, tattooed, disinterested young man who can’t make change correctly is a worried 19-year-old college student, balancing his apprehension over final exams with his fear of not getting his student loans for next semester.

Remind us, Lord, that the scary looking bum, begging for money in the same spot every day

(who really ought to get a job!) is a slave to addictions we can only imagine in our worst nightmares.

Help us to remember that the old couple walking annoyingly slow through the store aisles and blocking our shopping progress are savoring this moment, knowing that, based on the biopsy report she got last week, this will be the last year they go shopping together.

Heavenly Father, remind us each day that, of all the gifts you give us, the greatest gift is love.  It is not enough to share that love with those we hold dear.  Open our hearts not just to those who are close to us but to all humanity.  Let us be slow to judgment and quick to forgiveness and patience and empathy and love.

Amen!
