FROM THE PASTOR

 ALLELUIA!

“Christ is risen!  Alleluia!  Christ is risen indeed!  Alleluia!  Alleluia!”  For these next fifty days and for every first day for a year’s worth of weeks we proclaim those glorious words of witnessed fact.  We shout them out in word and song and, in good Lutheran fashion, blow the roof off with our swells of music and refrain.  We want those words heard above the din of bombs and gunfire, and we want those words heard in the somber silence of a funeral home as death strikes another blow.  We want the entire world to know this good news that death has met its match.

We gather together as the community of the faithful in our country and city churches around that bright light of the paschal candle, around that font of belonging, and around the Table of the Lord, and we smell the lilies and the flowers and the freshness of new spring growth, and we celebrate this good news that we have in common – Christ is risen!  Victory!

Yes, to a world steeped in sin, the news comes as light into the darkness.  There is no better sound in the ear than to hear that the power of sin, the power of death, and the power of evil do not hold us in bondage forever.  And we celebrate the mystery of it all, for we cannot explain it all like some lecture in the science hall.  We can only do what a host of witnesses and believers have been doing for 2,000 years, and that is announce over and over again what we truly believe – death has no more sting, death has no more control, hell is crushed, and sin is conquered, and we, by God’s grace, through faith in Jesus Christ are saved from all that darkness.

We gather together on those first days of the week, and this is what we celebrate, and this is what we strive and struggle to take with us back to our homes, back to our work and school and marketplaces.  We bring this good news in word and deed to where we seek to feed

the hungry and hold the dying and visit those in prison and comfort those who are grieving.  In the name of the risen Lord, Jesus Christ, we tell in word and deed that hope is truly ALIVE in the risen Christ.

No, the world does not need our explanations; it needs only our proclamation.  “Christ is risen!  Alleluia!  Christ is risen indeed!  Alleluia!  Alleluia!

SUNDAY, APRIL 24TH, COFFEE HOUR FORUM

On Sunday, April 24th, during a coffee hour at both Trondhjem (10:45 a.m.) and Hayward (9:30 a.m.), the delegates to this year’s Synod Assembly will lead a Forum Hour to present some of the issues of importance that will be coming before the Assembly and that also relate to this summer’s ELCA Assembly in Orlando.  The two major issues coming before the Assemblies have to do with a possible change in ELCA policy concerning the ordination of non-celibate gay and lesbian candidates for ministry, as well as the possibility of authorizing clergy to bless gay and lesbian unions.  Also, there will be the matter of authorizing the creation of a new book of worship for our ELCA.  Please mark this date on your calendars and plan to come to this Forum.  This year’s SE MINN Synod Assembly will be held in Rochester on May 6-7.

BREAKFAST WITH THE BISHOP

Our Synod’s annual Men’s Breakfast with the Bishop will be held on Saturday, April 23rd, 8:00 a.m. at Cabella’s in Owatonna.  Bishop Usgaard will lead the morning devotions, and the special speaker this year will be Al Batt of rural Hartland, MN.  Many know Al from his newspaper column or from other speaking engagements.  He is a writer, speaker, storyteller and humorist and cartoonist.  He is perhaps best known for his quotable quotes, like, “The secret of happiness is to make others believe they are the cause of it.”  The only cost is for the buffet breakfast.  MEN, if you are interested, please sign up on the sheet at church on either April 3rd or 10th.  We will meet at church on the 23rd at 7:10 a.m. to pool rides.

HAYWARD NEWS

 MISSION STATEMENT

We the people of Hayward Lutheran Church confess the Triune God, and strive to follow the words and deeds of Jesus Christ.

VISION STATEMENT

As a community of faith in Jesus Christ, we will demonstrate care and compassion for one another and also to a world in much need.  God’s Word and the Holy Sacraments are central to our life of faith.  As we grow and are nourished by these, we will bring the good news of God’s forgiveness, life and salvation to those around us.

MISSION TANZANIA:  MEET THE HARTWIGS

At the HLC Annual Meeting, upon the recommendation of the Congregation Council, HLC voted to commit itself to the sponsorship of a Missionary.  The ELCA Global Mission office gave us three possibilities of people we could sponsor.  The Council chose Dr. Kristopher and Rebecca Hartwig.  They are working with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania on a special medical project and are stationed with the church in Arusha, Tanzania, which is in the Northern part of the country.  The early part of March we received an e-mail from the Hartwigs and this is some of what they wrote:

Dear Pastor Malm and Hayward Lutheran Church:

Greetings in Christ from Arusha, Tanzania!  We just received word from Lea Lenning at ELCA that you have committed to helping with our support as missionaries here, and would like to express our gratitude, as well as to give you a clue as to who we are.

We relocated here last August after ten years at Westfield, NY, where I (Kris) was in a Family Medicine group and was also Medical Director for the Chautauqua County Hospice program for seven years.  Rebecca is a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner and does a lot of music and other stuff on the side.  (Note:  Westfield, NY is the original home of Welch’s Grape Juice, and also close to Pastor Malm’s hometown of Jamestown, NY.  So, we have some mutual things in common).

In addition to our children, Heidi and Nate, who are with us here, we have three older children:  Daniel does computer work in Los Angeles; Jenny is a junior at Easter Mennonite University in Harrisonburg, VA; and Kirsten is a sophomore at Goshen College in Indiana.

The short story about our getting to Tanzania is that we’ve LOTS of previous connections here.  Rebecca was born in Arusha – her parents being missionaries here.  I also lived here as a kid for five years – my parents being teachers.  Rebecca and I met here in Arusha.  We worked in Western Tanzania in a rural hospital setting for six years, up to 1994; and we’ve done several short trips back to help out, particularly in helping to set up hospice-type care.  My role here now has several layers:  Primarily, I am with the national Lutheran church office, and interact with each of the twenty Lutheran hospitals in the country in an attempt to boost some care-hospice type care at each one.  That involves a lot of travel!  So far I have gotten to all but one of the hospitals.  The program funding to this work is currently through the Lutheran World Federation.

Secondly, I work at a national level to advocate for hospice-palliative care.  For example, over 20,000 Tanzanians a year die from cancer, but less than 500 have access to any pain reliever stronger than aspirin.  Also, of course, hospice fits into the spectrum of care for AIDS, which by the best figures I’ve heard is infecting about 8% of the general population (almost 3 million people).  So we are networking into that area as well, at the government as well as the church level.

Thirdly, I am very close to Selian Lutheran Hospital in many regards, including helping them to start up their hospice program in 1999.  It is less than a half-hour bike ride to Selian from our home, and I try to get there as often as time permits, to help bolster their program, but more importantly, just to be able to see some patients so I don’t go nuts with all the office work.

Rebecca seems busier than I am.  She’s not into nursing here, but has involved herself a bit with a ministry with the street kids in Arusha and is always checking out various orphan programs in the area, of which there are many.  Then there’s the music, with a good group of fellow violinists, and, as of this past month, home schooling our 11-year-old.

Our biggest initial concern in coming here, as you might imagine, was our kids.  Two who are in college and one a Senior in High School, and a 6th grader.  Unexpectedly, to us anyways, only the 6th grader has had it rough with school.  His class was full at the area international school, so he got bumped up to 7th grade.  There he struggled until December and we finally decided to “bag it” and go with home schooling, which we’ve done off and on over the years (“we” means Rebecca), so that is settling a bit – quite nice, actually.

Life issues here have been fine otherwise, with a bummer of a used car being our biggest burden.  In other words, things are going quite well.  Tons of family and friends, as all of our immediate families, now get a chance to come back to Tanzania!  That will be fun, even if I’m away about a third of any given month.

Our work and ministry concerns are for ongoing funding (travel, seminars, etc.), ongoing, positive relationships in our many spheres of work, and ongoing gratification in doing something so alien as “desk work” and in having to travel a majority of the time.

In summation, we are ever so BLESSED to have the opportunity to serve here in Tanzania.  Being close to so many very, very sick people is challenging but gratifying, as we work on helping the larger system to do a better job with the overall care and support of the families affected.  And the ELCA has been most supportive from Headquarters in Chicago and from the congregations.  Tis’ good!  Please pray for us and that our children will remain well (the cry of every parent everywhere) and that we continue with a positive energy for ministry here in Tanzania.

(HLC received the following e-mail from Dr. Hartwig on March 21st)  Iambi Lutheran Hospital is in the center of the country, and currently undergoing an ambitious rebuilding program.  Part of their rebuilding is an AIDS program, which includes palliative and home care.  There is a lot of potential for positive growth here, with plans to open a nursing school as part of their overall goals.  Wish list:  Bicycles for easier transportation around the region that the hospital serves, analgesic medicines, small food items, and teaching of community seminars.  Will write more later.

In Christ,

Dr. Kristopher and Rebecca Hartwig

THIS ‘N’ THAT

FACING THE STORMS THAT COME YOUR WAY

A little girl walked to and from school daily.  Though the weather that morning was questionable and clouds were forming, she made the daily trek to the elementary school.  As the afternoon progressed, the winds whipped up, along with thunder and lightening.

The mother of the little girl felt concerned that her daughter would be frightened as she walked home from school and she herself feared that the electrical storm might harm her child.  Following the roar of thunder, lightening, like a flaming sword, would cut through the sky.  Full of concern, the mother quickly got into her car and drove along the route to her child’s school.  As she did so, she saw her little girl walking along, but at each flash of lightening, the child would stop, look up and smile.  Another and another were to follow quickly and with each the little girl would look at the streak of light and smile.

When the mother’s car drew up beside the child she lowered the window and called to her, “What are you doing?  Why do you keep stopping?”  The child answered, “I am trying to look pretty.  God keeps taking my picture.”

May God bless you as you face the storms that come your way.

Sunday after church, a Mom asked her very young daughter what the lesson was about.  The daughter answered, “Don’t be scared, you’ll get your quilt.”  Needless to say, the Mom was perplexed.  Later in the day, the pastor stopped by for tea and the Mom asked him what that morning’s Sunday school lesson was about.  He said, “Be not afraid, thy comforter is coming.”
