FROM THE PASTOR

NO FEAR!

Sometimes you still see a young person wearing the T-shirt with the words on it “NO FEAR!”  I think it is a term that relates to sports activities and especially to “extreme” sports, such as hang gliding or skiing or snowboarding on very steep slopes, or bungi jumping, and the like.  And the message is “Don’t fear such things, just do it!”

Yet, for most of us, we tend to live with many forms of fear in our lives.  We live behind locked doors of fear.  We pretend everything is satisfactory.  We bluff our way through the day, feigning well-being.  But our fears keep us locked in.  We are afraid to move outside of our sheltered existence.  We are afraid of not succeeding at work, at school, or at relationships.  We are sometimes even afraid of success.  We are apprehensive about the future and the decisions facing us.  And we are so afraid of death and dying that life is intensely squeezed out of every day.

For the Jewish people, the Day of Pentecost came fifty days after their Passover Day and festival.  It was called “The Feast of Weeks,” when the people brought the first fruits of the harvest of grain, fruit or animals to the Lord at the Temple.  It was a festival that brought, as did the Passover Feast, many Jewish pilgrims from many nations to the Temple for worship and festival.

On that day, some seven weeks after Jesus’ resurrection from the grave, many of the disciples were still gathered in that same room where Jesus had shared the Passover meal and his own NEW meal with them.  They were still gathered in fear and perplexity about what to do and where to go and who to be.  They still felt like they were in the midst of chaos.

But then came that loud, roaring sound, like the rush of a mighty, tornadic wind, and strange and mysterious little flames of fire dancing over the heads of all who were gathered in that room, and that ecstatic feeling of a

rush of power into their fearful flesh.  New life!  New creation!  Order out of chaos and life out of death!  And a strange sense of peace.

Fifty days ago, they had felt this same sense of peace and power, as the risen Christ Jesus appeared before them in that same room.  It is also a peace and a power that WE have experienced from time to time in our own lives, whether gathered together with others in a time of worship, or in that “closet” of prayer and devotion at home.  Has there not been that moment when WE have heard Christ in our midst, speaking to us those words, “Peace be with you.”  It may have been a moment with music, or with a biblical or preached word, or a word from a friend, child or spouse – something of that voice – “peace be with you.”  Christ has presented Himself to us in word, voice, wind or fire and brought us what we need to fight our way out of the darkness of that fear, the chains of that fear, so that we also might have “NO FEAR!”

Christ’s peace is ours, His gift to us.  The Holy Spirit breathes life into us and fills us to overflowing.  And then we are sent out into the community.  We are given our marching orders to leave rooms locked by fear.  We receive the Spirit that we might, by word and deed, tell others that Christ is alive, that sin is forgiven, that death has met its match.

We now have work to do, in BEING the Church.  But always, as on that FIRST Easter Day, we need to gather at the Table of the Lord and receive Christ, receive sustenance for the journey.  Come, let us gather at the Table and be nourished by our Lord, and then let us go – go wherever the Spirit may send us, so that we may breathe this LIFE of God into so many people who live in those darkened rooms of fear.

WEAR RED!!

DAY OF PENTECOST:  SUNDAY, MAY 15TH

On Sunday, May 15th, members of HLC and TLC are encouraged to WEAR RED, and also to lend to the worship service that day any RED FLOWERS you may have, such as potted geraniums, carnations, roses, and even red petunias.

As they say, “This is a red-letter day!”  It is a festival day.  For HLC it is Confirmation Day.  For all congregations, it is the festival of the BIRTHDAY OF THE CHURCH.  We celebrate how God’s Holy Spirit has empowered his believers around the world to GO, make disciples, baptize and teach the good news of God’s salvation in Christ Jesus our Lord.

So, come and join in the celebration, and WEAR AND BRING RED!

GREETINGS FROM THE HARTWIG’S

Our Missionary Family

Greetings in the Name of the Risen Christ!

“Blessing” is another word for the rains, coming to a thirsty earth and anxious people hoping very hard for a good crop season.  April is the usual rainy season and, indeed, it has been raining off and on for 2 weeks now.  People are so busy!  Almost every family has some small plot for crops, and many a larger one out in the countryside a bit.  When rains are erratic or fail, the results are devastating.  But for now, there is optimism in the air wherever we go.

We have had a full and varied past 2 months.  Mid-February was a meeting of 17 Lutheran hospitals with 2 from each hospital, building up Hospice care.  Our emphasis was on strengthening the spiritual side of things, and we had excellent input from the experienced pastoral team from Selian Hospital.  It gave me plenty of work for follow up, and I’ll begin serious travel again in May, hoping to really encourage these places that still struggle with such limited resources.

The week following that seminar was a trip to Rwanda, as part of a delegation to raise awareness for Palliative Care and perhaps jumpstart some activities there.  It was another intense time, and for those of you who have seen Hotel Rwanda, you might imagine being there.  I stayed at that very same hotel.  The city of Kilgali is clean, busy, and has minimal crime.  Yet nearly every face on those streets was a part of the devastation of 1994.  How can it be?  A picture I will always have with me is from a trip to visit an outlying Catholic Hospice.  I am a passenger with 3 women.  We are met by a priest who treats us to lunch and then gathers the women in his vehicle for a further journey, as I head back to Kigali.  Only then did someone explain to me:  the older woman in the group had lost her 4 children in 1994, all being presumed dead.  But word had come recently that one of those very children had been sighted in a place to which they were now heading.  I have no idea what they found, and wonder at the anguish of daring (or not) to hope.

March has been slower, with the only travel going to see Heidi in Kenua.  She is doing so well!  We have had other sweet family times as Rebecca’s brother and daughter visited for much of February, and my Mom was in the area working that month as well.  It’s been an opportunity to be more involved at nearby Selian Hospital and Hospice, as well as to dig into the various fundraising and proposal writing tasks that are at hand.

Pray for continued encouragement for us in the work.  That would include further project funding for developing all of these hospices (big bucks, and many potential donors).  And wellness in travel, school, and faith.  Home school for Nate Seth IS an answer to prayer.  Our lemon of a car looks to be getting replaced, at least by summer’s end, thanks to a big assist from ELCA.  And Heidi is now making decisions about next year and college.

Thankful for all of your encouragement, prayers, and communications,

Kristopher for all of the Hartwig’s

THE LORD’S BASEBALL GAME

Freddy and the Lord stood by to observe a baseball game.  The Lord’s team was playing Satan’s team.

The Lord’s team was at bat, the score was tied zero to zero, and it was the bottom of the 9th inning with two outs.  They continued to watch as a batter stepped up to the plate named LOVE.

LOVE swung at the first pitch and hit a single, because “LOVE never fails.”

The next batter was named FAITH, who also got a single because FAITH works with LOVE.

The next batter up was named GODLY WISDOM.  Satan wound up and threw the first pitch.  GODLY WISDOM  looked it over and let it pass:   Ball one.  Three more pitches and GODLY WISDOM  walked because he never swings at what Satan throws.

The bases were now loaded.  The Lord then turned to Freddy and told him He was now going to bring in His star player.  Up to the plate stepped GRACE.  Freddy said, “He sure doesn’t look like much!”

Satan’s whole team relaxed when they saw GRACE. Thinking he had won the game, Satan wound up and fired his first pitch.  To the shock of everyone, GRACE hit the ball harder than anyone had ever seen!  But Satan was not worried; his center fielder let very few get by.

He went up for the ball, but it went right through his glove, hit him on the head and sent him crashing on the ground; the roaring crowds went wild as the ball continued over the fence…for a home run!

    THE LORD’S TEAM WON!

The Lord then asked Freddy if he knew why LOVE, FAITH and GODLY WISDOM could get on base but couldn’t win the game.  Freddy answered that he didn’t know why.

The Lord explained, “If your LOVE, FAITH and WISDOM had won the game, you would think you had done it by yourself.  LOVE, FAITH AND WISDOM  will get you on base but only My GRACE can get you Home.

“For by GRACE are you saved, it is a gift of God; not of works, lest any man should boast.”  Ephesians 2:8-9.
