AN INVITATION TO LENT

DEAR FRIEND IN CHRIST:

The liturgy for Ash Wednesday contains a pastoral invitation to the season of Lent that is worth reflecting upon.  In it we are reminded that with the whole church we enter this time of remembering Jesus’ Passover from death to life, and also that OUR  life in Christ is being renewed.  We begin this holy season of Lent by acknowledging our need for repentance and for God’s mercy.  We are created to experience joy in communion with God, to love one another, and to live in harmony with creation.  But our sinful rebellion separates us from God, our neighbors, and creation, so that we do not enjoy the life our creator intended.  Thus, as disciples of Jesus, we are called to a Lenten discipline in these coming weeks that contends against evil and resists whatever leads us away from love of God and neighbor.

Christ our Lord invites you, His own disciple, to what is called the discipline of Lent – a time of self-examination and repentance, of prayer and fasting, of sacrificial giving and works of love.  Why?  So that we might be nourished and strengthened by God’s Word and Sacrament for such words and deeds of love to family and friend, to neighbor and stranger.  Why?  So that we might prepare our hearts and minds for the coming focus on the two greatest events in the life of Christ and His holy Church – the Crucifixion and the Resurrection of our Lord.

This year, for our Midweek Lent worship, we gather at HLC for a fellowship meal at 6 p.m., followed by our worship at 7 p.m.  Our focus will be on THE LORD’S PRAYER, as Martin Luther teaches it to us through the Catechism.  The schedule and topics are as follows:

Come and join us for our spring Adult Class as we explore GOD’S LOVE IN JESUS.  These sessions are focusing on the film “Jesus of Nazareth,” a Franco Zeffirelli film on the life of Christ from several years ago.  We are looking at the final part of the film as it tells the Gospel story of Jesus’ last days in and around Jerusalem and leading to His crucifixion and resurrection.  Can’t make all the sessions?  Just come when you can and enjoy this telling of the Gospel in both word and picture, and share in the discussion.  There are two different opportunities for you:  Wednesday mornings at 10:15 a.m. in the overflow room, or Sunday evenings at 6:30 p.m. in the overflow room.

HOLY LAND PILGRIMAGE AND OLIVE HARVEST

Would you like to make a pilgrimage to the Holy Land and participate in an olive harvest?

Pastor Curtis Zieske (Trinity Lutheran, Albert Lea) is a veteran of several visits to the Holy Land.  He would like to organize a group of 20-25 people who not only want to see the traditional holy sights (the “ancient stones”), but also the “living stones” of today’s Holy Land.

A central feature of this pilgrimage will be assisting with the annual olive harvest (mid-October through November).  Those who are more physically able in our group will have the opportunity to give a couple of hours of time and labor for two or three days with the harvesting of 800 olive trees on the site of Augusta Victoria Hospital.

We will visit the biblical and historical sites in the region as well.  Individuals will also have ample time to do further exploring and traveling on their own.

For more information, contact Pastor Zieske at (507) 373-2466, E-mail:  tlpastor@msn.com, Web: www.tlc-al.org.

THE QUIET SERMON

A member of a certain church, who previously had been attending services regularly, stopped going.  After a few weeks, the pastor decided to visit him.

It was a chilly evening.  The pastor found the man at home alone, sitting before a blazing fire.  Guessing the reason for his pastor’s visit, the man welcomed him, led him to a comfortable chair near the fireplace and waited.

The pastor made himself at home but said nothing.  In the grave silence, he contemplated the dance of the flames around the burning logs.  After some minutes, the pastor took the fire tongs, carefully picked up a brightly burning ember and placed it to one side of the hearth all alone.  Then he sat back in his chair, still silent.  The host watched all this in quiet contemplation.  As the one lone ember’s flame flickered and diminished, there was a momentary glow and then its fire was no more.  Soon it was cold and dead.

Not a word had been spoken since the initial greeting.  The pastor glanced at his watch and realized it was time to leave.  He slowly stood up, picked up the cold, dead ember and placed it back in the middle of the fire.  Immediately it began to glow, once more with the light and warmth of the burning coals around it.

As the pastor reached the door to leave, his host said with a tear running down his cheek, “Thank you so much for your visit and especially for the fiery sermon.  I shall be back in church next Sunday.”

Are you the lone ember who has flickered and diminished?  If so, your church  invites you back into the light and warmth of the fire.

Your companions are like the buttons on an elevator.  They will either take you up or they will take you down.

He that walketh with wise men shall be wise; but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.

Proverbs 13:20

Some people complain because God put thorns on roses, while others praise Him for putting roses among thorns.

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

Philippians 4:8
