CHRIST ON TRIAL

CHRIST MOST CERTAINLY WAS ON TRIAL

Two thousand years have come and gone since the Jewish High Priest Caiaphas and the Roman Governor Pilate passed judgment on Jesus in Jerusalem.  And though the verdict passed down at that trial was a miscarriage of justice, the result fulfilled God’s purpose:  To save the world by sacrificing His dear Son.

CHRIST MOST CERTAINLY IS ON TRIAL

His saving act, His being in the world, His radical teachings all demand a reaction.  Every human heart must wrestle with questions like:  Who is this Christ?  Is He who He claims to be?  If so, what does He mean for me and my living?  Christ demands a reply.  Yes, daily, Christ IS on trial

SO HE IS AGAIN DURING THIS SEASON OF LENT

During our mid-week Wednesday gathering in Lent, we will focus our worship times around this theme of CHRIST ON TRIAL.  COURT will be in session and we will hear from the court lawyer about this trial and about those witnesses who testified either for or against this Jesus of Nazareth.

ASH WEDNESDAY – FEBRUARY 6TH7:00 P.M.

Our Parish gathering will be in the HLC sanctuary for worship with Holy Communion.  We will hear the lawyers opening remarks as to who this Jesus is, and who will be on the witness stand in the coming weeks.

WEDNESDAY – FEBRUARY 13TH – SUPPER AT 6:00 P.M. – WORSHIP AT 7:00 P.M.

We will hear how MATTHEW speaks of Jesus’ scandalous association with the seedier side of society.

WEDNESDAY – FEBRUARY 20TH – SUPPER AT 6:00 P.M. – WORSHIP AT 7:00 P.M.

We will hear how a former cripple gives her evidence of Jesus’ loose interpretation of the Sabbath Law.

WEDNESDAY – FEBRUARY 27TH – SUPPER AT 6:00 P.M. – WORSHIP AT 7:00 P.M.

We will hear the accusation that Jesus was “A disturber of the peace.”  Was that true?  The prominent Jewish leader Nicodemus tells us about this.

WEDNESDAY – MARCH 5TH – SUPPER AT 6:00 P.M. – WORSHIP AT 7:00 P.M.

PARISH ADULT CLASS TO BEGIN

“YOU ARE MY DISCIPLES”

The PARISH ADULT CLASS convenes again, starting Wednesday, February 13th at 10:15 a.m. and will go for six sessions.  We will follow the third and final part of a series on the video “JESUS OF NAZARETH.”  This time the focus will be on the public ministry events and teachings of Jesus, including the calling and preparing of His disciples for the work of ministry that they will carry on after Jesus is gone.  Thus, the theme of “YOU ARE MY DISCIPLES.”    As in the past, the format will be to watch a portion of the video on the life of Christ, and then have a time for questions and discussion.

There will also be the opportunity (if enough people sign up) for you to take in these sessions on Sunday evenings, beginning on February 10th, at 6:30 p.m.  Please sign up at the worship service for the time you wish to come or call the church office (373-8479).  Come and join us and hear what Jesus teaches us about discipleship.

              GREETINGS FROM OUR MISSIONARY FAMILY

Dear Friends,

Many greetings of the New Year.  May it signify for you the kind of renewed hope and determination that we also consider in our Christian faith - A reminder of renewed hope at Christmas - A renewed determination to follow the way of that one we call the Christ.

In our lives here, and my work especially, we have different ways of looking at hope.

IN WORK:

That we might be wrong about colleague John’s apparent brain tumor.  That he might find hope in resolution of family and community issues close to him.  That “healing”, for him, would be profound and everlasting.

For continued healthy growth of our many hospital programs, as each face many, many challenges.  We so hope that the service provided means a kind of hope even for those who might be dying.

Thankful and hopeful that our palliative care “team” in Arusha is now a strong four.  That we might grow in relationship, teamwork, and dedication as we try to manage truly daunting travel and meeting schedules.

IN OUR LIVES AS A WHOLE:

Hope that energy and health continue strongly, that we might continue our ministries here in medicine, music and community.

Hope that our children stay and grow well, that we might see more of them next year and experience less of the melancholy that comes from being oceans apart at Christmas time.

Hope that the complex planning for the coming year, including two necessary trips to the States, works out for all of us.

Hope is so mixed with gratitude, is it not?  We hope because we have experienced Grace.  And, so we are

grateful for 2007.

In brief, our hope for travel to the States this coming year includes July/August and then again November/December (at least for Kristopher).  It is our “Home Assignment” year as missionaries and we have an obligation to personally connect (visit, if possible!) most of our 40-plus supporting churches.  I also have two major examinations to take – one in Family Medicine and the other in Hospice/Palliative Medicine.  Every 7 years or so I have to “recertify”, and by chance this year both exams come due.  One is late July and the other early November.  Thus, we will attempt church visits, family connections and other obligations around those fixed times.  A letter on possible visit dates to your community should be coming soon.

Krishopher, Rebecca and Nathan (whose Kenya Boarding School return has been postponed at least a week due to post-election violence – another area to hope for a kind of peace that will be meaningful)

THIS ‘N’ THAT

WHAT DO TEACHERS MAKE?

The dinner guests were sitting around the table discussing life.  One man, a CEO, decided to explain the problem with education.  He argued, “What’s a kid going to learn from someone who decided his best option in life was to become a teacher?”

He reminded the other dinner guests what they say about teachers: “Those who can, do…Those who can’t, teach.”  To stress his point, he said to another guest, “You’re a teacher, Bonnie,  Be honest.  What do you make?”

Bonnie, who had a reputation for honesty and frankness, replied, “You want to know what I make?  (She paused for a second, then began…)

“Well, I make kids work harder than they ever thought they could.

“I make a C+ feel like the Congressional Medal of Honor winner.

“I make kids sit through 40 minutes of class time when their parents can’t make them sit for 5 minutes without an I Pod, Game Cube or movie rental.

“You want to know what I make?”  (She paused again and looked at each and every person at the table.)

“I make kids wonder.

“I make them question.

“I make them apologize and mean it.

“I make them have respect and take resonsibility for their actions.

“I teach them to write and then I make them write.  Keyboarding isn’t everything.

“I make them read, read, read.

“I make them show all their work in math.  They use their God-given brain, not the man-made calculator.

“I make my students from other countries learn everything they need to know about English while preserving their unique cultural identity.

“I make my classroom a place where all my students feel safe.

“I make my students stand, placing their hand over their heart to say the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag, One Nation Under God, because we live in the United States of America.

“Finally, I make them understand that if they use the gifts they were given, work hard, and follow their hearts, they can succeed in life.”

(Bonnie paused one last time and then continued.)

“Then, when people try to judge me by what I make, with me knowing money isn’t everything, I can hold my head up high and pay no attention because they are ignorant…You want to know what I make?  I MAKE A DIFFERENCE.  What do you make, Mr. CEO?”

His jaw dropped; he went silent.

THANK YOU TEACHERS – and that includes public school teachers, mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, and spiritual leaders/teachers – Pastors/Priests/Clergy

SINGING WITH THE LUTHERANS

BY Garrison Keillor

I have made fun of Lutherans for years.  Who wouldn’t if you lived in Minnesota?

But, I have also sung with Lutherans and that is one of the main joys of life, along with hot baths and fresh sweet corn.

We make fun of Lutherans for their blandness, their excessive calm, their fear of giving offense, their lack of speed and also for their secret fondness for macaroni and cheese.  But, nobody sings like they do.

If you ask an audience in New York City, a relatively Lutheranless place, to sing along on the chorus of “Michael Row the Boat Ashore”, they will look daggers at you as if you had asked them to strip to their underwear.  But, if you do this among Lutherans, they’ll smile and row that boat ashore and up on the beach!  And down the road!

Lutherans are bred from childhood to sing in four-part harmony.  It’s a talent that comes from sitting on the lap of someone singing alto or tenor or bass and hearing the harmonic intervals by putting your little head against that person’s rib cage.  It’s natural for Lutherans to sing in harmony.  We’re too modest to be soloists; too worldly to sing in unison.  When you’re singing in the key of C and you slide into the A7th and D7th chords, all two undred of you, it’s an emotionally fulfilling moment.

I once sang the bass line of Children of the Heavenly Father in a room with about three thousand Lutherans in it, and when we finished, we all had tears in our eyes, partly from the promise that God will not forsake us, partly from the proximity of all those lovely voices.  By our joining in harmony, we somehow promise that we will not forsake each other.

I do believe this:  These Lutherans are the sort of people you could call up when you’re in deep distress.  If you’re dying, they’ll comfort you.  If you’re lonely, they’ll talk to you.  And, if you’re hungry, they’ll give you tuna salad!
