A MESSAGE FROM PASTOR Spande

Advent will be upon us by the time you are reading this.   The first Sunday in Advent, Nov. 29, Pastor Bob and I will be exchanging pulpits.   We feel it is important to keep this tradition up during the interim.  He and I have also agreed to spend time talking regularly so that there will be good communication between the two parishes.

As you have probably noticed I do not use my article in the newsletter to write a devotional.   Instead, I use the space to communicate about things that are happening in the parish.  I find this is especially important when I am doing interim ministry.  However, even in the years before doing interim work, I tended to do the same thing.   I feel good communication is extremely important, especially in times of change.

First, let me explain something that was in the minutes of the last Hayward council meeting regarding my receiving a $2000 housing allowance.  This money is NOT in addition to what I am receiving as a salary.   This is simply a designation for tax purposes.  This is something new for you as Pastor Malm and all your other pastors lived in a parsonage and could not receive a housing allowance.  This allowance is only for pastors who furnish their own housing.  And, the IRS is very clear that regardless of how large the allowance is, we can only claim what we actually spend for housing.   For this reason it is common to have a large allowance in case we need it,  knowing we may not need that much.

On to another subject.   When I was interviewed for this position I explained to the committee that I had would only take the job if I was able to take a couple of trips to see our grandchildren.   I will be gone the weekend of Dec. 13 when we go to NYC to see our 9 year granddaughter and her parents.  That Sunday Leslie Neist will conduct worship.  The standard interim contract calls for one week off for every ten weeks of service.  By then I will actually have been with you ten weeks.

January 20 we will go to Santiago, Chile, to be with our other grandchildren and their parents.   We will be gone slightly less than three weeks.  Obviously this trip will exceed accrued vacation time.   By then we will probably have a better idea how long I will be with you and we can negotiate accordingly.

We have learned to accept that we don’t see our children and grandchildren often but for us it is a priority to see them at least twice a year.   The grandchildren are growing up so fast and we want to be able to be part of their lives as much as we can. This is a large part of why we retired.

The church council at Hayward has set the annual meeting for the last Sunday in January.   I will not be present for that but that ought not be a problem.  We have talked about not having a joint meeting of the two councils at this time.   The major issue for that meeting is setting the benefit package for the pastor.  My reimbursement is set by my contract.  When you are ready to call a new pastor you will have to have a joint meeting to establish that benefit package.

Finally, I am doing fairly well on shut in visitation.   Austin is new territory for me and getting acquainted with all the care facilities in Austin has taken longer than I had planned.   The next time through the list will be much easier.  Thank you for the privilege of serving you.   This is a great parish and you have much to offer a new pastor.

This is my update for this month.
Your interim pastor, Richard Spande

Call Process Update

The Hayward Trondhjem call committee met on Thursday, Nov. 19, 2009 to organize and make appointments to interview for a new pastor. We plan to start interviewing the last part of November and continue until we have a candidate that we think will work well with our situation.  We need to pay for mileage, meals and if need be, a motel room. All of this is very confidential at this time as people interviewing probably have churches that might not know they are interested in moving. We hope that we will have a recommendation for you some time in the future.

Co-Chair

From the Council Chair:

In the interest of improving communications between the church council members of the congregation I have decided to include a message “From the Council Chair” from time to time in our monthly newsletter.  This is my first installment.  My concern this time is the ready reserve debt we are currently servicing.  We owe in excess of $5,000 and are paying a rather high interest rate on that loan.  We have been doing very well lately in meeting our monthly financial obligations, but the ready reserve obligation is a constant millstone weighing us down.  My recommendation is that we pay it off.  It is not a pleasant thing to come to the membership asking for more money, especially when so many of you are already doing so much for our financial well being.  My suggestion is this:  If you are in a financial position where you can make an additional contribution to help pay off this debt then make whatever contribution you think is appropriate.  If you are not in a position where you can realistically contribute toward the payment of this debt then don’t, and please do not feel guilty about it.  You are doing all you can do and need do no more.

Thank you all for considering this matter.

Neal

Trondhjem WELCA News

WELCA held their November meeting on Sunday November 15th after church. We will still be accepting any Fall and Thank Offerings through December 10th. These offerings can be given to Elaine Lukes or Betty Krause. On Sunday December 13th we will be having a brunch after church, this will take the place of the Christmas Program. We are also accepting soap and health kits through April 2010. We will accept quilt materials anytime.

WELCA Secretary,

Elna Mae Severtson

Synodical WELCA meeting held every 2 years. Purpose is to conduct business, elect officers, choice of several workshops to attend and renew and enlighten spirit through worship an inspirational speakers.

Shirley, Ruth and myself (Elaine: voting delegate) attended both Friday meeting and all day Saturday meeting. 5 SE MN conferences attended.

Saturday there were 66 voting delegates, 9 Synod Board, 4 clergy, 12 scholarship attendees, 30 guests rest non-voting delegates for a total of 206 attendants. We have 5100 churches in Minnesota. The 5 SE Minnesota conferences are Blue Earth River (ours), Cannon River, MN River, Root River, and Zumbro River.

Our Synod is supporting The “Agape Social Center Project” in Tanzania, Africa. It is a center where women can go for study, worship, retreat, monetary support. Total cost of project is approx. $75,000.00 As of July this year they have raised only $15,000.00. They would like to start kitchen and dining area.

In order to raise money, they decided to have a “Jar Silent Auction” at the convention. They received 193 jars, baskets, canisters, etc. They were so overwhelmed that they had to set up more tables and print out more “auction slips”. As of today I have no total dollar amount collected. We saw bids from $1.00 to $40.00 or more before the auction ended.

Phyllis Rude from Alaska: representing churchwide organization spoke on some of the things they are planning for new projects to support. This is where our “ Thank Offering” goes. It helps supply materials for education women and supporting their work churchwide. They received recently and estate gift of $355,000.00

Available from CWO are CD’s on various activities that they are involved with (free by contacting CWO). Also she mentioned a book “I Am She” and a booklet “ Listening To God” that are also available.

At the afternoon meeting they announced “Love Offering” totals:

1,115 Health Kits

17 School kits

1 Layette

1 Mid Wife kit

193 Jars, baskets,etc.

We were very impressed by the totals!! With only 206 attendees, we thought this was very good!! The 3 of us thought the President and V.P. election needed better planning. It was very confusing.

All the worship, speakers, workshops, and subjects discussed were well presented. We hope more of us can attend in 2011!! It will be held at Grace Lutheran in Waseca.

 Convention offering divided-

 ¼ Good Earth Villiage

¼ Churchwide Women of The ELCA

 ¼ Churchwide “Katie’s Fund”

 ¼ Agape Center in Tanzania

 Voting Delegate

THIS ‘N’ THAT

On moving day for the Malms, Faye Learn made some outrageous bars that everyone has been talking about. Faye has decided to share the recipe so we can make them at home whenever we like. Thanks Faye!!

Caramel Bars

32 caramels, unwrapped

2/3 cup evaporated milk (we didn’t specify last month, but it is 2/3 cup)

1 cup flour

¾ cup oatmeal

½ cup packed brown sugar

½ tsp soda

1/3 tsp salt

¾ cup butter, melted

1 cup chocolate chips

Melt caramels with the evaporated milk. ( I do this in the microwave, in a 4 cup glass measuring bowl, 2 minutes then stir, then additional minutes going by 1-2 minutes at a time, till thoroughly blended).

Combine dry ingredients, mix in butter. Reserve 1 cup for topping. Press the rest in bottom of a 9 x 13 pan. Bake at 350 for 12 minutes. Sprinkle chocolate chips over baked crust, let sit a few minutes til chips are melted, spread over crust. Drizzle caramel mixture over chocolate chips then lightly spread with knife. Sprinkle reserved crumb mixture ovet the top ( I take a small piece and pat it out in my fingers and place on top, continue dropping over the entire top). Bake 20 minutes at 350. Cool for 2 hours.

Enjoy!!!!!!
