TH= E POWER OF THE KEYS

 =

            <= /span>Our daughter, Sarah, recently called one morning and said, <= /span>“I locked myself ou= t of the house.  I went to take the dog= out to do his thing and the door locked behind me. <= /i> So, I’m standing here on the = porch in my pajamas, robe and slippers waiting for Paul to come with his key to let me back in.”  =   Ah, yes, where is that all important KEY when you need it – that KEY that= has the power to let us into the warmth and comfort of home, or the place of one̵= 7;s business, etc.?

        &= nbsp;   Many a teenager has come to understand the power of the KEYS when they are learning to drive or when they get their driver’s license.  Mom and Dad control those car keys= as to when and how they are used.  A= nd, if those keys, or the car, are not used correctly, then they get taken away for awhile.  That particular power= of the keys is one which parents need to have, and may even enjoy having.  It’s amazing what you can ge= t your teenager to do because of that power of the keys.

        &= nbsp;   So, what if we talk about the power of= the keys as we understand it in the church?  Here we are not talking about those keys that literally lock or unlock the doors of the church.  Although I do remember how, in my wife’s home church, there was once an elderly man who was church custodian who thought that he had the power of the church keys, literally.<= span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>  He was very proud of his custodial= work and in getting the floors and all nice and clean and orderly.  He worked very hard at it.  And when he had everything all ship-shape, he locked the doors.  No one was going to mess up h= is fine work.  And that got to be the problem.  Kids came for confir= mation class and couldn’t get in the door.&= nbsp; Circles came to meet and the doors were locked.  So, the pastor and the church offi= cers needed to have some further conversation with him about how he managed those keys and the doors, so that all had better access to the building, even if things did get messed up.

        &= nbsp;   From our confirmation and catechism days, we read and hopefully learned about th= is matter of “The Office of the Keys.”  This “Office” is that authority which Christ gave to His church to forgive the sins of those who<= /span> repent= and to declare to those who do not repent that their sins are not forgiven.”  This authority is granted us t= hrough the words of Jesus to His disciples in John, chapter 20:  = Receive the Holy Spirit.  If you forgive the sins of<= /span> any, they are forgiven; if you retain t= he sins of any, they are retained.”  Also from Matthew 18:  = Truly I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be lo= osed in heaven= .  With God’s gift of = the Holy Spirit upon all believers there comes this authority to proclaim the gospel= of God’s forgiveness of sins to one another and to the whole world; to proclaim to the confessing, truly repentant person that his/her sins are fu= lly forgiven by God, as a gift, through faith.=   To the person who could trust the proclamation and accept that this forgiveness was given in the very name of Jesus, it was accomplished = ̵= 1; comp= leted.  Sins were dismissed, gone, cast out forever.

        &= nbsp;   But, to the unrepentant, unbelieving person also comes an equally strong and cle= ar declaration.  To you, the unrepentant one, your sins are held against you, fixed upon you so that you cannot escape from them until you DO repent – until you DO believe in God’s forgiveness through Jesus Christ and His death for you upon that cross.  Your sins continue to = accuse you, judge you and trap you.  As soon as that sin is committed, it adheres to you with all of its guilt and shame, and no personal effort can possibly free you.  You may th= ink that you can free yourself in some way, but it is not so.  You are bound, chained, held by it= .  And only one person is able to rem= ove that sin – remove it so completely that it is as if it never existed.  Jesus Christ Himself, through that declaration of the Christian believer upon you, saying to you:  ̶= 0;In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, your sins are forgiven you.”

        &= nbsp;   For any Christian believer to retain the sins of another is simply to acknowled= ge and declare that there can be no forgiveness of sins without that contrite = act of confession and repentance on the part of that sinful person.  One must have a heart that is set = FOR it and not AGAINST it.

        &= nbsp;   In this month of FEBRUARY, when w= e have that focus on VALENTINE’S DA= Y and on matters of the HEART, it mi= ght be good for us to focus on such things as God’s great LOVE for us and that God truly has a HEART-FELT desire for a= living relationship with you and me.  God has a HEART for us, and do WE have a HEART for GOD?

        &= nbsp;   Martin Luther was the one who rem= inded the church that this = power= of the keys is a power bestowed upon all her faith= ful membe= rs by our Lord Jesus Christ.  Luther writes:  “This power now is here given to all Christians, i= .e., to each person who is a Christian.  But who is a Christian?  The one who believes has the Holy Spirit.  Therefore, every Christian has the power, as do the Pope and the Bishops, etc., to retain or to remit sins.=   Do I hear then that even I may hear one= ’s confession, and = baptize and preach and give the Sacrament?  NO!  St. Paul says, ‘All things should be done dece= ntly and in order’ (I Cor. 14:40).  Yes, we all have this p= ower; but no one is to make bold to exercise it publicly = = except= = = one be chosen thereto by = the congregation.  Privately, howe= ver, one may well use it; as when my neighbor comes to me and says, ‘Frien= d, I am distressed in my conscience.  Say an absolution over me;’ then I may freely do this, preach the gospel = to him and tell him how he is to appropriate the works of Christ and is firmly= to believe ChristR= 17;s righteousness is his, and that his sins are Christ̵= 7;s.  This is the greatest service I may render to my neighbor!  Who can fully set forth what an unspeakable, mighty, and blessed consolation this i= s, that with one word a person may unlock heaven and lock up hell for another!”=

            <= /span>The power of the keys is so= mething to be declared as gospel to others.  It is also something to be believe= d, to be trusted, in faith.  It is something that should be very heart-felt and heart-cent= ered, for i= t is one of the most loving things we can do for another.  As John writes in his letter, and = as we hear in our own liturgy of confession: = I= f we sa= y that we have fellowship= with = H= im (God) while we are wal= king in darkness, we lie and do not do what is true; but if we walk in the light as He Himsel= f is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His = Son cleanses us from all sin.  If we say that we have no sin, we d= eceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.&nbs= p; If we confess our sins, He who is faithful and just will for= give us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.=   If we say that we have not sinned,= we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.”<= /span>  (I John 1:6-10)  To this<= /ins>, Mar= tin Luther and all of us c= an say, “Yes, Amen, this is most certainly true.”=

MI= DWEEK LENTEN WORSHIP SERIES – 2009

̶= 0;BY HIS STRIPES” – Healing Wounded Relationships

DEAR FRIENDS IN CHRIST:

=

        &= nbsp;   This year our Midweek Lenten Worship begins the end of the month on Ash Wednesda= y, February 25th.  For those Lenten Wednesdays leadin= g up to Holy Week, we will follow this theme – “By His Stripes” – Healing Wounded Relationships.

        &= nbsp;   Christianity is all about relationships – our relationship with God and our relationship with other human beings and with all of creation.  This year we will follow Christ dur= ing the week of the Passion, from the time of His arrest to His death on the cr= oss, and along the way we will seek to discover how Jesus reclaims us and all our relationships.  We will hear t= he Gospel message of God’s death-defying love brought directly into our family, church and community relationships.  It is = a love that heals, forgives and transforms.<= /span>

        &= nbsp;   We gather together on Wednesday evenings at 6:00 p.m. (not Ash Wednesday or Maundy Thursday) for a fellowship me= al in the social hall, with a worship service there following at 7:00 p.m.  Bring your friends, family and neig= hbors.

GOOD NEWS!!

&nb= sp;

            <= /span>December is our chance, as the church, to get the jump on the rest of the world, for this is when we begin our NEW YEAR.  As we begin this New Year, we focus on some new scripture lessons, a= s we focus on the Gospel of Mark, along with other lessons from both the Old and= New Testaments.  Mark is the conde= nsed version of the story of Jesus; it comes at us quickly, ever using that word “immediately.”  Ma= rk does not even bother to give us the birth stories of Jesus, leaving that to Matthew and Luke. He starts his story of Jesus with the ADVENT, the coming,= of John the Baptist, who will announce “the way of the Lord.”  In quick fashion, Jesus is suddenly there, along the Jordan River, being baptized by John and blessed by God the Father, and then moving on into His public ministry, where He proclaims His preaching theme:  “The t= ime is fulfilled, and the Kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.”

            <= /span>For the people of Jesus’ day, this TIME that has come is the fulfillment = of Jewish dreams, the TIME when God will show His special love for the Jews by breaking the bonds of their servitude and exalting them among the nations.<= span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>  It is the TIME that they have been waiting for – waiting so long that they had almost ceased to believe = that it could ever come to pass.  Suddenly, God comes near to them, among them, in the person of Jesus= of Nazareth, God’s Son, Savior, and invites His people to REPENT, to open their hearts and change their minds, and believe that God’s promises = are now being fulfilled right before their eyes.  Truly this IS the good news.<= /o:p>

            <= /span>Today, we who claim Jesus as the Christ, our Lord and Savior, as we hear those wor= ds of Jesus, we understand that He is speaking not just to His fellow Jewish people then, but to us now, we who are willing to listen to this good news = here and now.  Yet, it is a surpris= ing and extraordinary thing to say – that the Kingdom of God has come near you and that you must believe it.  As this Advent season moves on to the Christmas – Epiphany sea= son, this good news continues to be surprising.=   Suddenly, out of the blue, a young girl in Nazareth gets the news fr= om one of God’s own messengers that SHE has been chosen by God to become pregnant and deliver into this world the very Son of God, the Messiah.  Who me?  Pregnant?  Really?

            <= /span>Mary quickly recovers and humbly agrees to her new and chosen role as God’s own servant, and goes on to rejoice in it all.  But that shock – that of rec= eiving good, yet unsettling, news – that shock is also something that WE sha= re with Mary.  For this message of Jesus is not just glad tidings of hope for a weary, war-torn, terrorized wo= rld; it also is a calling, an invitation to turn from all our worldly preoccupat= ions and REPENT, open our hearts and change our minds.  Something FROM us, then, is requir= ed.  And the ADVENT scripture lessons g= o on to tell us what that is: we need to step it up, get to work, prepare, watch, wait, turn, open, and change.

            <= /span>The NEW YEAR begins once again with these words and urgings for our new and continuing journey through the coming months; that TIME, that ADVENT has co= me once again.  This ADVENT seaso= n is a time of joy and expectation.  = It is a time of HOPE amid our various world crises, it is LIGHT come into our self-created darkness, it is a time  of EXPECTATION for One who will, once again, come among us and deliv= er us, and it is a time of TRUST in the sure and certain promises of God.  God IS among us and God has NOT abandoned us.  Yes, the Kingdo= m of God is among us, with us, embracing us.&nb= sp; That is GOOD NEWS, and it reminds us that we, the faithful, have a w= ay at looking at this troubled world in a GOOD NEWS way that, to the non-belie= ving world, looks rather odd and senseless.&nbs= p; These days the world can only say, “Look around you.  Look at this mess we’re in, = the economic mess, the natural disasters mess, the war, violence and terrorist = mess, the global-warming mess.  It&#= 8217;s all a big mess!  Where’s= the good news in any of this?”

            <= /span>But into this human, self-centered, greed-induced mess, comes Jesus Christ, God’s Son, Savior, and announces to this whole, messed up world, “The Kingdom of God has come near to you; REPENT, and believe in this good news.”  The angel o= f the Lord comes to that young girl, Mary and proclaims “Do not be afraid!”  A nervous moth= er listens to God’s Word and to the hopes that it engenders in her heart= .  A prophet stirs people to action, encouraging their expectation of a coming age of justice and peace.  WAKE UP PEOPLE!  The NEWS will be good, even if, li= ke the people of Jesus’ day, we have almost ceased to believe that it could = ever come to pass. Take heart; be of good courage, for the Lord has come near to us.  Dare to believe in this h= ope of the gospel, and dare to share it with others.  As we have just heard from our Lor= d on the Day of Christ the King, continue to bring that good news of salvation a= nd hope to others by feeding the hungry, giving drink to the thirsty, clothing= the naked, visiting the lonely, imprisoned and oppressed, caring for the sick a= nd lame, and welcoming the stranger.

Joy to the world, the Lord is come!

Let earth receive its King;

Let ev’ry heart prepare Him room

And heav’n and nature sing.

No more let sin and sorrow grow

Nor thorns infest the ground;

He comes to make His blessings flow

Far as the curse is found.

He rules the world with truth and grace

And makes the nations prove

The glories of His righteousness

And wonders of His love.

GOLD, COMMON SENSE AND FU= R

&nb= sp;

<= span class=3DmsoDel>        &= nbsp;   My husband and I had been happily (most of the time) married for five years, b= ut hadn’t been blessed with a baby.&nbs= p; I decided to do some serious praying and promised God that if He wou= ld give us a child, I would be a perfect mother, love it with all my heart and raise it with His word as my guide.  God answered my prayers and blessed us with a son.  The next year God blessed us with another son.  The following ye= ar, He blessed us with yet another son.  The year after that we were blessed with a daughter.

<= span class=3DmsoDel>        &= nbsp;   My husband thought we’d been blessed right into poverty.  We now had four children, and the = oldest was only four years old.  I le= arned never to ask God for anything unless I meant it.  As a minister once told me, “= ;If you pray for rain, make sure you carry an umbrella.”=

<= span class=3DmsoDel>        &= nbsp;   I began reading a few verses of the Bible to the children each day as they la= y in their cribs.  I was off to a g= ood start.  God had entrusted me w= ith four children and I didn’t want to disappoint Him.

<= span class=3DmsoDel>        &= nbsp;   I tried to be patient the day the children smashed two dozen eggs on the kitc= hen floor searching for baby chicks.  I tried to be understanding when they started a hotel for homeless frogs in t= he spare bedroom, although it took me nearly two hours to catch all twenty-thr= ee frogs.

<= span class=3DmsoDel>        &= nbsp;   When my daughter poured ketchup all over herself and rolled up in a blanket to s= ee how it felt to be a hot dog, I tried to see the humor rather than the mess.=

<= span class=3DmsoDel>        &= nbsp;   In spite of changing over twenty-five thousand diapers, never eating a hot meal and never sleeping for more than thirty minutes at a time, I still thank God daily for my children.

<= span class=3DmsoDel>        &= nbsp;   While I couldn’t keep my promise to be a perfect mother, I didn’t even come close.  I did keep my pro= mise to raise them in the Word of God.

<= span class=3DmsoDel>        &= nbsp;   I knew I was missing the mark just a little when I told my daughter we were g= oing to church to worship God, and she wanted to bring a bar of soap along to “wash up” Jesus too.

<= span class=3DmsoDel>        &= nbsp;   Something was lost in the translation when I explained that God gave us everlasting l= ife, and my son thougth it was generous of God to give us his “last wife.”

<= span class=3DmsoDel>        &= nbsp;   My proudest moment came during the children’s Christmas pageant.  My daughter was playing Mary, two = of my sons were shepherds and my youngest son was a wise man.  This was their moment to shine.  My five-year-old shepherd had prac= ticed his line, “We found the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes.”  But he was nervous and said, ̶= 0;The baby was wrapped in wrinkled clothes.”=

<= span class=3DmsoDel>        &= nbsp;   My four-year-old, ‘Mary’ said, “That’s not ‘wrin= kled clothes,’ silly.  That&#= 8217;s dirty, rotten clothes.”  A wrestling match broke out between Mary and the shepherd and was stopped by = an angel, who bent her halo and lost her left wing.

<= span class=3DmsoDel>        &= nbsp;   I slouched a little lower in my seat when Mary dropped the doll representing = Baby Jesus, and it bounced down the aisle crying, “Mama, Mama.”  Mary grabbed the doll, wrapped it = back up and held it tightly as the wise men arrived.  My other son stepped forward weari= ng a bathrobe and a paper crown, knelt at the manger and announced, “We are the three wise men, and we are bringing gifts of gold, common sense and fur.”

<= span class=3DmsoDel>        &= nbsp;   The congregation dissolved into laughter, and the pageant got a standing ovation.  “I’ve ne= ver enjoyed a Christmas program as much as this one,” Pastor Brian laughe= d, wiping tears from his eyes.  “For the rest of my life, I’ll never hear the Christmas story without thinking of gold, common sense and fur.”

<= span class=3DmsoDel>        &= nbsp;   “My children are my pride and my joy and my greatest blessing,” I said as= I dug through my purse for an aspirin.

I Corinthians 13 – A Christmas Version

<= span class=3DmsoDel>        &= nbsp;   If I decorate my house perfectly with plaid bows, strands of twinkling lights = and shiny balls, but do not show love to my family, I’m just another decorator.

<= span class=3DmsoDel>        &= nbsp;   If I slave away in the kitchen, baking dozens of Christmas cookies, preparing gourmet meals and arranging a beautifully adorned table at mealtime, but do= not show love to my family, I’m just another cook.

<= span class=3DmsoDel>        &= nbsp;   If I work at the soup kitchen, carol in the nursing home and give all that I h= ave to charity, but do not show love to my family, it profits me nothing.<= /o:p>

<= span class=3DmsoDel>        &= nbsp;   If I trim the spruce with shimmering angels and crocheted snowflakes, attend a myriad of holiday parties and sing in the choir’s cantata but do not focus on Christ, I have missed the point.

<= span class=3DmsoDel>        &= nbsp;   Love stops the cooking to hug the child.  Love sets aside the decorating to kiss the spouse.  Love is kind, though harried and t= ired.  Love doesn’t envy another= 217;s home that has coordinated Christmas China and table linens.  Love doesn’t yell at the kid= s to get out of the way, but is thankful they are there to be in the way.  Love doesn’t give only to th= ose who are able to give in return, but rejoices in giving to those who can’t.  Love bears all t= hings, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.  Love never fails.  Video games will break, pearl neck= laces will be lost, golf clubs will rust, but giving the gift of love will endure= .

WHO STARTED CHRISTMAS?

<= span class=3DmsoDel>        &= nbsp;       A woman was out Christmas shopping with her t= wo children.  After many hours of looking at row after row of toys, and everything else imaginable, and after hours of hearing both her children asking for everything they saw on those = many shelves, she finally made it to the elevator with her two kids.<= /del>

<= span class=3DmsoDel>        &= nbsp;   She was feeling what so many of us feel during the holiday season time of the y= ear – overwhelming pressure to go to every party, every housewarming, tas= te all the holiday food and treats, getting that perfect gift for every single person on our shopping list, making sure we don’t forget anyone on our card list, and the pressure of making sure we respond to everyone who sent = us a card.

<= span class=3DmsoDel>        &= nbsp;   Finally the elevator doors opened and there was already a crowd in the car.  She pushed her way into the car and dragged her two kids in with her and all the bags of stuff.  When the doors closed she couldn&#= 8217;t take it anymore and stated, “Whoever started this whole Christmas thi= ng should be found, strung up and shot.”<= /p>

<= span class=3DmsoDel>        &= nbsp;   From the back of the car everyone heard a quiet calm voice respond, “Don’t worry; we already crucified Him.”  For the rest of the trip down the elevator it was so quiet you could have heard a pin drop.<= /span>

<= span class=3DmsoDel>        &= nbsp;   Don’t forget this year to keep the One who started this whole Christmas thing in = your every thought, deed, purchase, and word.&n= bsp; If we all did it, just think of how different this whole world would= be.
