THE HAPPINESS EMPORIUM
IS COMING TO HAYWARD

The happiness emporium barbershop quartet

will be coming to Hayward for our Hayward Days Outdoor Worship on July 12th, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. on the church lawn.    The HAPPINESS EMPORIUM was formed in December 1972, and right away they sounded like a winner.  In their first year and a half, they won four contests and placed in the top 10 in international competition.  Then, a year later, in June 1975, the HAPPINESS EMPORIUM was proclaimed the International Champions of Barbershop Quartet singing.  The members of the quartet have a combined total of over 125 years of quartet experience.   They have sung with seven district champion quartets, toured Pacific military hospitals on USO tours, and have sung for countless barbershop chapters all over America, Canada, England, Sweden and Ireland.  They have also sung for countless conventions, coast-to-coast barbershop shows, variety shows, gospel shows, radio and TV, the Grand Ole Opry, on New York’s Broadway and London’s Barbican Centre.  Pastor John and Sharon heard them last summer and they are a marvelous group of singers who share the Good News in a very inspiring presentation!!

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PASTOR

DO YOU BUILD A MONUMENT OR A MISSION?

At our Synod Assembly, as I was walking down the skyway/walkway, heading towards the Civic Center in Rochester, I found myself listening in on the conversation of a couple of pastors walking behind me.  Apparently, the one younger pastor was serving one of our newer congregations and the other, older pastor was saying how his congregation wanted to make a special gift to this new congregation.  But, he said, the members wanted to give a gift of something tangible, like some altar paraments or something that could be pointed to and be seen and be remembered when those members would visit this new congregation.  He went on to try and explain further.

The younger pastor said that he understood where they were coming from and he would accept the gift of $400 from this older congregation with that in mind.  Yet, at the same time, it kind of rankled him a bit.  He said to his colleague, “You know, I preach to my people all the time that we should not be about the business of building a monument, but that we should be building a mission.”  How true that is.  Perhaps that is why we call new congregations “Mission Congregations.”  Yet, whether a congregation is very new or very old, we should be thinking in terms of being a “Mission Congregation.”  Both HLC and TLC were started well over a hundred years ago.  At that point THEY were the “Mission Congregations.”  But should any congregation ever NOT be one?  And there’s the danger – the danger of becoming more like a monument than a mission.  Indeed, we often succumb to it much more than we would care to admit.  It is so easy to get focused on monuments instead of on mission – on self-preservation rather than self-less mission to others.

This being the month of our national celebration of Independence Day, I find myself reflecting on the several visits I have had to our nation’s capitol of Washington, D.C.  There is a city that is filled with many large and splendid monuments:  The Washington Monument, The Lincoln Memorial, The Jefferson Memorial, The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the various War Memorials, and the many museums, legislative and judicial halls.  Sometimes we can get so focused on those great and imposing monuments that we lose sight of what is at the foundation of them all and why they are there.  We must not forget that they are meant to be reminders and inspirations to us of what this country and democracy are all about, and that as citizens of this country what we are obligated to defend and uphold and proclaim and commit to others.  There is a mission to which we are all called as citizens of this country that is spelled out for us in documents like “The Declaration of Independence”, and “The Constitution of the United States,” and “The Bill of Rights.”  There is a mission to which we are called that is spelled out for us in that Word of God we call the Bible.

Put into your mind’s eye the picture of your pastor standing before you at the front doors of your place of worship.  In your mind’s eye see also that there stands in front of him a young child, perhaps five or six years old.   “Look around you,” says the pastor.  “Look at the fine woodwork of the pulpit and altar, the beautiful pictures and banners, the wonderful stained glass, and the colorful paraments.  Listen to the sweet sound of the ringing bell.”  But is this what we have been called to build?  Now look at this young child.  Is this not the focus of our mission, our calling?  Did not Jesus tell us, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you.”

Has that commission and mission ever changed?  Is it not still supposed to be focused on people, on children, on human beings in need of forgiveness, life and salvation?  But how much easier it is to focus our time and energies and money on monuments rather than on mission – on the spiritual needs and education of that young child, or on the physical needs of that person who is hungry, thirsty, alone, in prison or in poverty or oppression.

In your mind’s eye do you see that child in your church or in your community or neighborhood?  And if they do not remain at the heart of it all, then of what need or value are all the monuments, whether spiritual or national?  All the more reason for that investment of your time, talents and treasures to continue to meet those mission needs.  Keep the focus on the mission more than the monument.

                                                                                                Pastor John Malm

YOUTH NEWS

UPCOMING EVENTS

The following article was taken from

the Oakland and Moscow Lutheran Parish Messenger

and was written by Pastor Bob Berthold

The 2009 ELCA Youth Gathering will be in New Orleans, LA, with the van full of students leaving Sunday, July 19th, returning Tuesday, July 28th.  On the way we’ll stop at hotels with a swimming pool and for some recreation.  The cost is $300.  Transportation and housing will cost about another $300 to total + $600.  The students bring money for food and souvenirs.  The church will pay half and the students pay half.  Brenda Wangen from Oakland Lutheran Church is coming as the woman chaperone.  Students going are:  Alice Wangen, Andrew Wangen, Amy Lysne, Skyla Bena, Logan Tufte, Tate Tufte, Amanda Glassel, Isaac Paulson, and Ben Paulson.

The Theme, Jesus, Justice Jazz, draws from the rich faith history, diverse cultures, and arts of New Orleans.  It will stretch our understanding of what it means to live in relationship and service with each other in the manner of Christ…for life…wherever we are!  At Youth Gatherings, youth and adults are immersed in worship, music, Bible study, service, learning, play, prayer, the witness of faithful leaders from around the world, reflection, caring for others, and new friendships.  The Gathering is a time of change and growth because we gather in the presence of God’s Spirit with others who journey with Jesus.

The 4th, 5th, & 6th grade students recently went to the St. Paul Science Museum and Imax theater.  The 7th, 8th & 9th grade students recently went to The WOW Zone in Mankato for laser tag, bowling, and miniature golf.  Both groups of students will be invited to go kayaking on the Cannon River the end of June.  The cost for that is $10.

Vacation Bible School for all four congregations will be August 17-21 at Oakland Lutheran Church, for 3-year-olds through 6th grade.  We meet at 6 p.m. for food and fellowship, 6:30 p.m. for singing and a Bible story, and 7 p.m. for crafts centering on the Bible story of the day, finishing by 7:30 p.m.  The students are ready to come back together for class by August and the evenings allow people who work during the day to help.  The Bible stories for this year are:  Joshua, Gideon, Sampson, Samuel, and Ruth.  We learn Christian songs to be sung for the congregations on Sunday, July 23.  This is a great time of fellowship and Christian growth for all ages.  You are more than welcome for the 6 p.m. congregational meal!

The confirmation students will be learning the life of Jesus and the Parables that He taught.  The material costs $5.  The first meeting for students and parents will be Wednesday, September 9th at 7 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall at Oakland Lutheran Church.  We will discuss confirmation and upcoming youth events for the year.  I look forward to seeing you there.

The Adults are invited to a Bible Study on Thursday mornings at 10 a.m. at Oakland Lutheran Church to study the book of Revelation.  Think about joining us to discuss this important book in the Bible.

HARTWIG’S FINISH THEIR TIME IN THE STATES

The following letter was recently received from our missionaries, the Hartwigs

   Greetings in Christ.

We have finished up our time in the States now, having had a wonderful time celebrating Heidi’s St. Olaf College graduation.  She looks to be in Slovakia the next year or two, teaching biology at a Lutheran high school.  Kirsten took a break from nursing to join us from Alaska, and Jenny got a day off from Virginia and teaching to join us too.  Seeing parents as well meant balm for our souls and a sense of very special privilege.

We are healing well, albeit slowly, from the February robbery.  We are now in a new house rental situation, and finding a new kind of ‘normalcy’ for living there.

As we work through our own difficult memories, several messages of a similar type came to us these past few weeks.  Heidi’s Senior Art Show (Biology/Studio Art majors) was on the theme of “Calling Shadows”.  It had 6 charcoal drawings and one oil painting inspired by her interaction with HIV/AIDS in our Tanzania environment.  We felt the power of the mourning and the uncertain futures in those images.  “Thy Father’s Will” is a book written by a third cousin, Kirsten Jacobson Stasney, a historical fiction piece about our great grandfather and his struggles as a single parent that eventually lead to his taking of his own life.  That story has been a silent shadow in our family’s past these many years, only now getting the telling that we all need in order to make some sense of a complex past.  Finally, I am reading a fine novel by Annie Dillard, “The Living”, recounting the years in the late 19th century of “settling” the far Northwest.

We are indeed amongst the living, however we might suffer, and part of our lot is to live with the shadows of the past and of the future.  Reference Psalm 116 – long a favorite – especially verses 8 and 9:  "For you have delivered my soul from death, my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling. “I walk before the Lord in the land of the living.

Next time we will write more of my Hospice work, which goes very well.  Connected to the above themes has been our work these past 6 months at incorporating bereavement care for children.  With what memories and what futures do they live?

We continue to appreciate prayer for us and for the work here.  Many thanks.

HLC CONGREGATION COUNCIL CHALLENGES IT’S MEMBERS

Through our General Fund account with American Bank, we have a line of credit that is called a Ready Reserve account.  Through that we are authorized to draw up to $10,000 to help us when our income is less than our necessary expenditures.  The Congregation Council authorized that increased line of credit a year ago.  On July 10th, we need to renew that note.  With that in mind, it would be helpful if we can significantly reduce the amount of debt we have through that line of credit, which is now at about $5,500.  This is our mutual CHALLENGE – to go the extra mile with our giving in order to reduce this debt and still keep up our regular giving to the needs of our church.  We met the challenge with our Building Fund debt; can we now do the same with this account?  Thank you for your consideration and help.

THIS ‘N’ THAT

IS JESUS KNOCKING?

A nurse on the pediatric ward, before listening to the little ones’ chests, would plug the stethoscope into their ears and let them listen to their own hearts.  Their eyes would always light up with awe, but she never got a response equal to four-year-old David’s comment.

Gently she tucked the stethoscope into his ears and placed the stethescope over his heart.  “Listen”, she said.  “What do you suppose that is?”  He drew his eyebrows together in a puzzled line and looked as if lost in the mystery of the strange tap – tap – tapping deep in his chest.

Then his face broke out in a wondrous grin and he asked, “Is that Jesus knocking?”

AM I A FIREMAN YET?

In Phoenix, Arizona, a 26-year-old mother stared down at her 6-year-old son who was dying of terminal leukemia.  Although her heart was filled with sadness, she also had a strong feeling of determination.  Like any parent, she wanted her son to grow up and fulfill all his dreams.  Now that was no longer possible.  The leukemia would see to that.  But, she still wanted her son’s dream to come true.

She took her son’s hand and asked, “Billy, did you ever think about what you wanted tobe once you grew up?  Did you ever dream and wish what you would do with your life?”  Bill said, “Mommy, I always wanted to be a fireman when I grew up.”  Mom smiled back and said, “Let’s see if we can make your wish come true.”

Later that day she went to her local fire department in Phoenix, where she met Fireman Bob, who had a heart as big as Phoenix.  She explained her son’s final wish and asked if it might be possible to give her 6-year-old son a ride around the block on a fire engine.  Fireman Bob said, “Look, we can do better than that.  If you’ll have your son ready at 7 o’clock Wednesday morning, we’ll make him an honorary fireman for the whole day.  He can come down to the fire station, eat with us, go out on all the fire calls, the whole nine yards!  And, if you’ll give us his sizes, we’ll get a real fire uniform for him, with a real fire hat – not a toy – one with the emblem of the Phoenix fire department on it, a yellow slicker like we wear and rubber boots.  They’re all manufactured right here in Phoenix so we can get them fast.”

Three days later Fireman Bob picked up Billy, dressed him in his uniform and escorted him from his hospital bed to the waiting hook and ladder truck.  Billy got to sit on the back of the truck and help steer it back to the fire staton.  He was in heavenn.

There were three fire calls in Phoenix that day and Billy got to go out on all three calls.  He rode in the different fire engines, the paramendic’s van, and even the fire chief’s car.  He was also videotaped for the local news program.

Having his dream come true, with all the love and attention that was lavished upon him, so deeply touching Billy, that he lived three months longer than any doctor thought possible.

One night all of his vital signs began to drop dramatically and the head nurse, who believed in the hospice concept – that no one should die alone – began to call the family members to the hospital.  Then she remembered the day Billy had spent as a fireman, so she called the fire chief and asked if it would be possible to send a fireman in uniform to the hospital to be with Billy as he made his transition.  The chief replied, “We can do better than that.  We’ll be there in five minutes.  Will you please dome a favor?  When you hear the sirens screaming and see the lights flashing, will you announce over the PA system that there is not a fire?  It’s the department coming to see one of its finest members one more time.  And, will you open the window to his room?”

About five minutes later a hook and ladder truck arrived at the hospital and extended its ladder up to Billy’s third floor open window.  Sixteen fire fighters climbed up the ladder into Billy’s room.  With his mother’s permission, they hugged him and held him and told him how much they LOVED him.  With his dying breath, Billy looked up at the fire chief and said, “Chief, am I really a fireman now?”  “Billy, you are, and the Head Chief, Jesus, is holding you hand,”   said the chief..

With those words, Billy smiled and said, “I know.  He’s been holding my hand all day, and the angels have been singing.”  He closed his eyes one last time.
