THE HAPPINESS EMPORIUM

will be coming to Hayward for our

       Hayward Days Outdoor Worship on

July 12th, 2009 at  10:00 a.m. on the church lawn.    The HAPPINESS EMPORIUM was formed in December 1972, and right away they sounded like a winner.  In their first year and a half, they won four contests and placed in the top 10 in international competition.  Then, a year later, in June 1975, the HAPPINESS EMPORIUM was proclaimed the International Champions of Barbershop Quartet singing.  The members of the quartet have a combined total of over 125 years of quartet experience.   They have sung with seven district champion quartets, toured Pacific military hospitals on USO tours, and have sung for countless barbershop chapters all over America, Canada, England, Sweden and Ireland.  They have also sung for countless conventions, coast-to-coast barbershop shows, variety shows, gospel shows, radio and TV, the Grand Ole Opry, on New York’s Broadway and London’s Barbican Centre.

the pastor's message

April 19, 2009

DEAR MEMBER OF THE HAYWARD-TRONDHJEM LUTHERAN PARISH:

I am using the occasion of my 65th birthday (April 18th) to announce to you and other members of the parish that Sharon and I have made our decision to retire from active ministry this fall.  Therefore, I will be ending my call to serve as your pastor on September 30th of this year of 2009.  My last day in the pulpit will be on August 30th, after which we will take accrued vacation and continuing education time for our transition to retirement in the city of St. Peter, Minnesota.

You need to know that this decision does not reflect on anything negative happening within the parish, or for that matter, in our personal lives.  As far as we are concerned, our experience with you in ministry over these last seven-plus years has been great.  You have been very gracious towards us and supportive of us, and we cannot thank you enough for allowing us the privilege to be in ministry with you.  Having said that, we do feel that the time is right for us to move on – we into retirement, and you into continuing mission and ministry with new leadership into the future.

Our decision to retire is not at all an easy or recent decision.  Some know that we have been mulling this over for some time.  With that in mind, we knew that we wanted to retire to the area of Mankato or St. Peter, due to their proximity to our children and grandchildren.  We have been looking at the city of St. Peter for a long time; we like its size, the businesses and the facilities that it has, including one of our church colleges, Gustavus Adolphus, and what it has to offer to the community.  Thus, a few months ago we began looking into housing in that area, and here we feel that the Lord opened an amazing door for us.  Our daughter, Sarah, knew a friend who had a friend, Kari, who had a new house for sale in St. Peter.  Kari had graduated from Gustavus College and then had been employed by the school, and then built a house there in 2005.  But then, in 2008, she felt the Lord’s call to consider ordained ministry.  She applied for enrollment and was accepted in to the Harvard Divinity School in Boston and began her studies there last fall.  She put her house up for sale, but at a time when few houses were selling.  Thus, she was anxious to sell it, even at a reduced price, and thus, we found a home and a price that we really liked.  We have entered into a purchase agreement with Kari and we hope to close on the deal the end of June.  For this process we have been working with Kari’s father, a retired banker from a town NW of St. Peter, who has been amazingly helpful to us.  Through the purchase agreement we also have access to the house now.  This has also met a need for our daughter, Sarah, and her husband, Paul, who needed to find some cheaper housing for a few months; also Paul has been teaching some religion courses at Gustavus this semester.  So they are now living at our (almost) home in St. Peter.  Come September, they will move back to other housing in the Twin Cities, and we will start moving in.

This is all a way of saying that what has developed for us has affirmed to us that the Lord is with us and guiding us in this decision we have made to move into retirement.  It also affirms for us that the Lord will also be with you and this parish in guiding you through this coming transition to new leadership, mission and ministry in the coming years.  God has been faithful to you in this in the past and God will be faithful to you into the future.  That is ever God’s promise.

Meanwhile, Sharon and I cannot thank you enough for everything we have received from you in these seven years.  We pray that the Lord has also blessed you in some small measure through our ministry with you.  Our ministry is not yet over with you, for it will continue on through this summer.  We ask for your continued prayers and support as we continue to work together, and as we help one another look out into the future shape of our lives and ministry in this marvelous Kingdom of God.  To that end, may God bless us all in these coming days and months, and may we all say an AMEN to that.

God’s Grace and Peace go with you.

                                                                                                Pastor John and Sharon Malm

YOUNG PEOPLE TO GRADUATE FROM HIGH SCHOOL

This year there are two young people from the Hayward/Trondhjem Parish who will be graduating from High School.  Congratulations to Cortney Thostenson from Trondhjem Lutheran and Samantha Anderson from Hayward Lutheran.

THANK YOU to STEVE & KAYE TUFTE and BRIAN & NANCY BERHOW for “heading up” the “crew” who planned, prepared and served the delicious breakfast on Easter Sunday.  Thank you also to the parents and youth who helped with the serving and cleaning up.  GREAT JOB!!

MUSICAL NOTES

THANK YOU to the members of the Hayward/Trondhjem Choir for their music on Easter Sunday and for giving of their time for all of the practices.  Another big thank you to Vern Frydenlund for his excellent trumpet accompaniment for the choir.

MAKING THE OLD CHIMES NEW AGAIN

If you have been at worship at Hayward Lutheran recently, you may have noticed that Sharon has made use of the old set of chimes that are above the organ on the wall.  These have not been in use for several years since we installed the new organ.  We recently got them rewired to a power source so that they can be used again.  Unfortunately, during their time of disuse, the chime keyboard was damaged and needs to be replaced, and then the chimes need to be cleaned and tuned.  The cost for this is estimated to be about $1,500.  For this purpose, we now have about $477.00 in our Worship and Music Fund that can be applied towards this project.  If you are interested in supporting this project, your gifts are welcomed.  Please designate them to that fund.  Thank you!!

MISSIONARY HARTWIG HAS BREAK-IN AT THEIR HOME

(The following letter was received from the Hartwigs)

Greetings in the name of Christ.  We give thanks for you, our friends, and for the support and prayers we continue to receive from so many.

Some of you know that we recently had a break-in at our home.  I was away, and ten armed men broke in at 2 a.m., with Rebecca there alone, and they pillaged the house.  No physical harm was done, but we are deeply shaken and are still sorting out how to carry on.  Theft of this nature happens, even with many precautions, and we are far from alone in experiencing this.  That fact does not make us feel any better; it only highlights a particular risk in living here.

A few thoughts and experiences from these recent weeks:

The most valuable thing stolen from us was our peace.  In hard times, what is your Psalm of comfort?  This verse from Psalm 90 has struck us:  “Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”  Healing is not any fun.

My mother is visiting for her own work with education here (good timing for us!).  A night guard at the place she stays gave condolences to us, through her, and cautioned that “if we hold these things in our heart, God is not able to come in.”  Profound words:  some experiences will tend to “harden our hearts”, somehow proving the cynicism of the larger world.  We can nurse that cynicism, or we can make a few choices.  A good friend observed to us that for some weeks after his family experienced a similar break-in, every face they saw on the road appeared angry and suspicious.  He came to realize that people were mirroring his own expressions.  When he made the effort to smile, unnatural as that felt, the warmth and generosity of the faces returned.  As we heal, some choices come.

Some perspective from a home visit during a recent work trip to the far south, near the Malawi border: a 6-year-old with epilepsy profoundly malnourished and unable to eat easily, mother recently widowed, eldest daughter home sick.  While we have hope and expect healing – we can see it – for some it is hard to see.

In may we will both be in the States briefly for Heidi’s college graduation from St. Olaf College.  Celebrations, gatherings, mourning, they all continue.  So does healing.  And peace is with us, even when we don’t feel it.

Help us in praying for a heart of wisdom in the time ahead.

Kristopher and Rebecca

P.S.  One reason to be late with this notice is that our e-mail addresses got taken along with the computer stuff.  It will take us awhile to sort it all out.

ALTAR GUILD

WOULD YOU LIKE TO CONTRIBUTE FRESH FLOWERS?

Fresh flowers for the altar are a beautiful addition to our worship service.  If you wish to furnish flowers, all you need to do is call the Altar Guild president, Marlene Thompson (373-3895).  The Guild will purchase and display the flowers for you, and if you wish, will put an acknowledgement in the Sunday bulletin.  Cost of the flowers is usually about $20.  Your generosity and support are greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

THIS ‘N’ THAT

THE SNEEZE

They walked in tandem, each of the ninety-two students filing into the already crowded auditorium. With their rich maroon gowns flowing and the traditional caps, they looked almost as grown up as they felt.

Dad’s swallowed hard behind broad smiles and Moms freely brushed away tears.

This class would NOT  pray during the commencement – not by choice, but because of a recent court ruling prohibiting it.

The principal and several students were careful to stay within the guidelines allowed by the ruling.  They gave inspirational and challenging speeches, but no one mentioned divine guidance and no one asked for blessings on the graduates or their families.

The speeches were nice, but they were routine, until the final speech received a standing ovation.

A solitary student walked proudly to the microphone.  He stood still and silent for just a moment, and then it happened.  All 92 students, every single one of them, suddenly SNEEZED!!!   The student on stage simply looked at the audience and said, “GOD BLESS YOU, each and every one of you!”  And he walked off stage.

The audience exploded into applause.  This graduating class had found a unique way to invoke God’s blessing on their future with or without the court’s approval.

WHY GOD MADE MOMS

(Answers given by 2nd grade school children to the following questions)

WHY DID GOD MAKE MOTHERS:

She’s the only one who knows where the scotch tape is.

    Mostly to clean the house.

To help us out of there when we were getting born.

HOW DID GOD MAKE MOTHERS?

He used dirt, just like for the rest of us.

Magic plus super powers and a lot of stirring.

God made my Mom just the same like He made me.  He just used bigger parts.

WHAT INGREDIENTS ARE MOTHERS MADE OF?

God makes mothers out of clouds and angel hair and everything nice in the world and one dab of mean.

They had to get their start from men’s bones.  Then they mostly use string, I think.

WHY DID GOD GIVE YOU YOUR MOTHER AND NOT SOME OTHER MOM?

    We’re related.

God knew she likes me a lot more than other people’s moms like me.

WHAT KIND OF LITTLE GIRL WAS YOUR MOM?

My mom has always been my mom and none of that other stuff.

I don’t know because I wasn’t there, but my guess would be pretty bossy.

They say she used to be nice.

WHAT DID MOM NEED TO KNOW ABOUT DAD BEFORE SHE MARRIED HIM?

    His last name.

She had to know his background.  Like is he a crook?  Does he get drunk on beer?

Does he make at least $800 a year?  Did he say NO to drugs and YES to chores?

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY, MOMS!!
