A MESSAGE FROM PASTOR Spande

And now we are looking at Easter together.  As you read this we will be in Cancun with Beth’s brother and his wife, a trip planned many months before I signed on with you. Let me share a bit of background on our trip. I will be back for Easter Sunday and am looking forward to our worship together.

In the past decade Beth and I have buried four parents, a niece, and many other dear friends.  Plus, in my hospice work I regularly deal with death. I look forward to Easter.  There is much mystery surrounding Easter but it is a joyful mystery.  We are given a taste of a world we can not fully know or understand in our time on this earth.

On another note, I want to address something which will be very important when you welcome a new pastor.   Your new pastor will need help knowing what is happening in the congregation.    Not long ago I visited a parishioner who has had a very difficult winter.  Things are much better now.  That is the good news.  The bad news is that I just found out about the situation two weeks ago.

I suspect many in the parish what was happening.   It would have been nice if they had told me.  Please know there are many positive things in the background.   When I visited I was welcomed most warmly.   I apologized for not having visited earlier and it was clear the apology was not needed.  I am an interim pastor who has many obligations and they understood this.

The reason I write this is not about me and what I do or not do.  The point is that your new pastor will not be treated so gently and graciously. He or she will be judged by his or her appearances in the hospital and other places where a pastor’s presence is expected. One can only respond when one knows what is expected.

While the process is taking longer than we thought it would, I have told your leadership that, if it is your desire, I will continue as your interim until you call a new pastor.  My workload with hospice has increased considerably since I signed on with you and it definitely means I have less time for what needs to be done in the parish.  In this context I am reminded of the distinction between urgent, important and.......   I intend to be faithful to doing what is urgent.  I hope to have some time for what is important.   The remainder is not likely to be attended to.

I am beginning to think that the delay in your being able to call a new pastor has probably been a very good thing.   Each month we deal with a few things which will make it easier for your new pastor when he or she arrives. And, do not despair.  The call committee is getting names and will likely be interviewing in the months ahead.

Finally, I am so pleased with the attendance at Lenten services.  It has been exciting to see so many people.  While some have suggested that the food is the explanation, and it has been very good, I suspect that you have responded to the call for Lenten obedience.

Thank you for the privilege of serving as you interim pastor.

Pastor Spande

News from our Missionaries:

On February 5th our office did a "handover" of 3 used pickups to 3 of our rural hospitals:  Nkoaranga, Ndolage, and Nyakahanga.  These vehicles will enable the hospice teams from these hospitals to be more mobile, doing many more outreach visits and many more home visits.  Many friends and churches contributed to this purchase.  For our team in Arusha, it was the fulfillment of a promise.  Of our 14 big hospital programs, 9 had dedicated vehicles for their work.  Now that number is 12.  The "handing over" was a formal affair, with Bishop Akyoo of Meru Diocese (Nkoaranga Hospital is there) presiding.  Hospital teams were gracious, though it has taken years for them to get something, and what they get is used.  All were extremely pleased.

Promises can be tough to keep.  WIth the rest of you we have watched the international community struggle to keep its promise of assistance to Haiti.  We look at our various work commitments and expectations, and our promise to be good and faithful servants, and watch ourselves struggle.

In Hospice care our promise is to accompany people and families throughout the time of illness and grieving.  In this Tanzanian environment, with teams working with such huge volumes of people - 500 to a 1000 - it is really, really difficult to keep that promise.

No wonder these 3 hospital teams are so grateful to get assistance!

Looking through the book of Hebrews, there are so many references to God's Promises.  But promises are not something we keep - rather they are ours to inherit.  May we be diligent, faithful, and patient in pursuing the promises of God (Hebrews 6:12).

PS  You should be hearing from us shortly about plans for our summer "home leave".  We "promise" to do our best to connect with all of you, but the time is short (2 months) and the churches are many (40 plus).

HAYWARD LUTHERAN CHURCH COUNCIL MEETING

MARCH 21, 2010

Present were Todd Enderson, Vem Frydenlund, Mary Anderson, Bonnie Felt, Sonja Johnson and Pastor Spande.

Vice President Todd Enderson called the meeting to order.

Steve Tufte was present and gave a talk about our mission. We discussed this and decided that the first thing to do was bring back our Sunday School and ways to get this off and running with participation.

The secretary's report was read. Motion made by Vem F. to accept, seconded by Mary A.

The treasurer's report was discussed and we are happy to report that our ready reserve has been paid off. A new quick book program has been installed and seems to be working well. Motion was made to accept the treasurer's report by Bonnie F. and seconded by Vem F.

Discussion was held about the progress of the call committee. Interviews are scheduled and we feel we are in a good position for a new Pastor to be welcomed to our church. We are in a good position financially and our thanks goes to the congregation for the support we have received. Hopefully we will have a new Pastor in the near future.

Pastor Spande will be gone Palm Sunday.

Motion to adjourn was made by Vem F. and seconded by Sonja J.

Respectfully submitted, Bonnie Felt
