A MESSAGE FROM PASTOR Spande
My wife recently ran into someone who told her, with great conviction, that all the earthquakes and the eruption of a
volcano mean that we are surely in the end times. I tend not to indulge in such
speculation. It serves no real
purpose.
However, in another sense perhaps we are in the end
times. I am not talking about the end of
the world. I am talking about the end of my time with you. You have not heard much from the call
committee recently. They have had
nothing to report. Just recently,
however, there has been activity which may result in the recommendation to call
a pastor. Let me outline the time line
for this process should this happen.
The call committee will not release any details about the
person until the congregational meeting. At this time members will be told
about the candidate and the financial package being offered. The financial package is typically rather
straight forward, following synod guidelines. The bishop expects the call to
reflect guidelines. There will be a
chance to ask the call committee questions about the candidate. Assuming both congregations vote to call the
candidate, the candidate will receive a phone call saying the call will be
forthcoming.
Immediately the paperwork will go to the bishop for his
signature and then it will be sent to the person being called. Since the processing of the paperwork tends
to take a bit of time, the candidate will have had some time to consider the
call before the papers actually arrive.
The response may come quickly or the candidate may take some time to
consider the call. It is impossible to say how soon the candidate would be in
the parish if the call is accepted.
Everything depends upon the situation the person is leaving and what
loose ends have to be tied up.
As I wrote last month, I am increasingly convinced that it
has been good for the parish that the process didn’t move too quickly. Some important issues have been dealt
with. The final one has to do with youth
ministry. There is a need for a Sunday
school at
More immediately, this summer there will actually be two
Vacation Bible schools . Youth will be invited to attend the VBS at
Finally, I expect to have an opportunity to speak with the
candidate, as will Pastor Bob. I can assure you we will both speak highly about
the parish based upon our experiences in the parish and what we think the
future holds.

every small rural Norwegian immigrant Lutheran church laid out along the
Iowa-Minnesota border could boast a large and active Ladies Aid
organization. From fundraising to cooking to janitorial services—whatever
work a congregation needed, the Ladies did it.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO CONTRIBUTE FRESH FLOWERS?
Fresh
flowers for the altar are a beautiful addition to our worship service. If you wish to furnish flowers, all you need
to do is call the Altar Guild president, Marlene Thompson (373-3895). The Guild will purchase and display the
