THE PARISH NEWS
HAYWARD-TRONDHJEM
LUTHERAN PARISH
August 2011
From Pastor Katie:
“Now the LORD said to Abram, ‘Go from your country
and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. I
will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name
great, so that you will be a blessing.’” Genesis 12:1-2
We have been reading some Old Testament stories in
worship that we don’t hear very often: of Abraham and Sarah and Hagar and Isaac
and Ishmael, of Isaac and Rebekah, of Esau and Jacob and Leah and Rachel. We
haven’t been hearing about them ruling nations, or fighting in great battles
(although Abraham was in one fight), but about their family struggles – to have
children, to get along as brothers, to deal with the challenges of married
life, to have land and tend to it and to animals and flourish.
We are used to, in church, talking about God’s big
plans – plans for the salvation of the whole world, for example, of which we
are all a part. Promises of a nation to Abraham. But the reality of those
promises in Abraham’s life are not so grand – he will have some kids and a
place to have crops and tend to sheep and goats. He is part of God’s plan to
bless the whole world, but it will happen for him through his complicated
family and how they live out their lives.
It says a lot about God and about us that instead
of stories about God taking place in the heavens or in palaces, they take place
out in the country, with farmers and herders and their families. The stories
are not about national crises but about conflict between brothers and between
sisters, about parents and husbands playing favorites. They are about family
life. That is where God is deeply involved in the Old Testament. There are big
plans to move toward, but God is involved in the everyday living of ordinary
people whom God cares for and loves.
We too, are involved in God’s big plans for the
world – plans to spread the good news of Jesus Christ to all people, plans that
everyone may know how much God loves them. But God is also deeply involved in
our lives every day, from the work we do to how we treat our families. What we
do, even though it may seem small to us, matters deeply to God, and shapes our
lives, our futures, and how God’s plans for us will be worked out.
The families of the Bible are a part of our family
of faith, and I look forward to continuing to read through the Bible, our
family scrapbook, each week with you.
God’s peace,
Pastor Katie

Crossing Over
Rebecca wrote a piece of music
of this title, and it somehow expresses our feelings of transition.
Looking ahead, there are a host of new possibilities, which we trust in God to
be made good, even as we have anxieties and uncertainties. Looking
behind, there is gratitude, some sense of relief, and more gratitude. It
is never easy to leave community and friends, yet now we must.
“Crossing over”: in
Biblical language, this mostly refers to the
In Hospice work, “crossing
over” often refers to the passage from life to death. It is a way of
expressing that special time as a process, somehow analagous to childbirth in
being fraught with anxiety but, inevitably, something which must come.
There is mystery here, as we have had cause to contemplate with close proximity
to such recent crossings.
Interestingly, in the New
Testament the one reference to Crossing Over that I could find was from John
5:24, referring to exactly the reverse of the Hospice meaning. “…whoever
hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be
condemned; he has crossed over from death to life.”
