HAYWARD-TRONDHJEM LUTHERAN PARISH
February 2011
From Pastor Katie:
Morning has broken, like the first morning;
Blackbird has spoken like the first bird.
Praise for the singing! Praise for the morning!
Praise for them, springing fresh from the Word!
Sweet the rain’s new fall, sunlit from heaven,
Like the first dewfall on the first grass.
Praise for the sweetness of the wet garden,
Sprung in completeness where God’s feet pass.
I have been in the process of
selecting hymns for February, and thought to myself one day, “Why not ‘Morning
Has Broken’? It has such a beautiful melody and is such a good hymn for opening
the service.” Then I opened my hymnal (it is in the new cranberry hymnal, not
in our green or blue for some reason) and discovered the lyrics above, of
blackbirds singing, rain falling, dew, and grass and gardens, and thought,
“That is not a winter hymn!” I filed it away in my memory to use once we’ve
thawed out a little.
Yes, we are in the long days
of winter, with the snow and the cold, and for me, breathing in the sweetness
of freshly dewed grass seems far away. February, especially this year, with
Lent not starting until March, can seem like a quiet time of year, and yet we
have a lot going on. Our units have been especially busy this winter, serving
not only on Sunday nights for Sunday Night Live!, but also for funerals, and
their hard work and dedication are appreciated. The book of Acts speaks many
times of one of the marks of discipleship being the breaking of bread together
(see Acts
We will also be planning in
February for our Lenten services as we look toward Ash Wednesday on March 9.
This is my first year here so I will be looking to many to answer questions
about what has been done in the past and what people have been hoping to do in
the future – I know that the Wednesday evening meals and services have been something
people have really enjoyed, and it will be a fun and creative process to plan
them, as well as another opportunity for us to break bread together. I will
also be talking with folks about doing a Bible study in
I myself will be on vacation,
beginning the evening of Sunday, January 30 and I will be back in the office
Wednesday, February 9. My first vacation since starting here! I can hardly
believe it. I look forward to the relaxation, but I know I will miss being here
as well. Pastor Bob will be covering for me while I am gone – simply call him
at
Morning does break for us
each day, whether we wake to a dewy garden or a white wonderland. God walks
with us regardless of the season. But I do hope each of you are staying warm,
healthy, and safe.
Peace,
Pastor Katie

Many greetings in Christ of the New Year, with
hopes that we will meet the possibilities and promises therein with courage and
grace.
We have had a few individual questions from some of
you regarding our transitioning back to the States later this year. Here
are a few clarifications in that regard:
·
If you have a covenent for our support through
Global Mission, please continue with it up to the end of 2011. Our family
will still be on ELCA support until then. If you have questions in this
regard, please contact Rev. Twila Schock at Global Mission.
·
We DO plan to organize church visits again this
year, at a more leisurely pace than usual. Part of our visit would be
sharing information with you as to future support of missionaries through
Global Mission.
·
Our work here with Hospice development is
definitely continuing. If you have contributed project support through
the special account at Global Mission, it will be needed more than ever!
This will also be a focus of our summer/fall communications with you.
Otherwise, our New Year has started well with
Nate's safe return to school in
We hope this is helpful.
Blessings!
Kristopher and Rebecca Hartwig
Sunday Night Live! begins again on January 9 and will run through the
end of February. We start out with a free meal for all at

Trondhjem Annual
Meeting
President
Mark Brekke called the annual congregational meeting to order. After having the
agenda approved, Kiven Lukes read the minutes from the previous year's meeting.
The minutes were approved on a motion from Sean Kraushaar which was seconded by Steve Kraushaar and passed.
Linda
Kraushaar gave the financial secretary's report. The general fund balance at
the close of the year was $6431.57. Member contributions were down slightly
this past year. One reason is the policy change by Thrivent that no longer
provides for matching funds for projects our church does. Instead, policy
holders must contact Thrivent to designate where they would like to have their
share of Thrivent's charity contribution sent to through the Thrivent Choice
program. To designate your funds call 1-800-847-4836 and respond with
"Thrivent Choice".
Cheryl
Lukes gave the treasurer's report. We are current on all of our bills and
commitments for the year except for $1,000.00 for pastor's mileage that has not
been billed to us yet from
Old
Business:
President
Brekke thanked everyone for the work they did this past year. He also thanked
Pastor Fick for accepting our call and told her how happy we were to have her
with us. Pastor Katie said she was grateful to be here and still learning how
we can do ministry together. Mike Severtson reported on behalf of the trustees
that the only pending project for the building is to fix the kitchen wall.
Betty Krause spoke for the WELCA group. They
met 8 times this year and gave 37 quilts, 19 health
kits, and 19 pounds of soap to world relief. The group also tied 70 regular
quilts and 10 babies' quilts this year as well as donating $960.00 to the
Trondhjem general fund. Linda Kraushaar told us of the 6 children she has in
Sunday school and 3 attending confirmation. There also was several attending

ALTAR GUILD
WOULD YOU LIKE TO CONTRIBUTE FRESH FLOWERS?
Fresh
flowers for the altar are a beautiful addition to our worship service. If you wish to furnish flowers, all you need
to do is call the Altar Guild president, Marlene Thompson (373-3895). The Guild will purchase and display the
flowers for you, and if you wish, will put an acknowledgement in the Sunday
bulletin. Cost of the flowers is usually
about $20. Your generosity and support
are greatly appreciated. Thank you.
