THE PARISH NEWS

HAYWARD-TRONDHJEM LUTHERAN PARISH

January 2011

From Pastor Katie:

“And the Word became flesh, and lived among us, and we have seen his glory …” (John 1:14)

It was a joy to celebrate Christmas with all of you. What a fun and spiritually rich time of year it has been. I especially enjoyed singing and hearing all the Christmas carols, which are some of my favorite hymns. Also I want to say a hearty “Thank you!” to everyone who gave me cards and gifts – you are so thoughtful and generous.

As we celebrated Christmas, Jesus birth into the world to dwell among us, we now move into January, where we get into some of the business of the church. Trondhjem will have its annual meeting on January 9 following worship, so Pastor Spande will be preaching in Hayward. Hayward will have its annual meeting after worship on January 30. Your pastor will head out on vacation that evening and return on February 8. Sunday Night Live! is starting again and will run from January 9 – February 27 on Sunday evenings at 5:30. We will be coordinating meals with the units for those 8 Sundays and serving families and the community. We will start looking toward planning for Lent, with Wednesday evening services, and probably a new Bible study in Hayward. January is the start of many things, not just a new year.

What we need to hold on to in the midst of planning and meeting and budgets and serving is that Jesus did dwell and continues to live among us. We remember that we are here to hear God’s Word of love for us, and to act out of that love for the good of this church and all people. Whether we are talking about money or planning a meal or putting together an annual report or electing council members, we do it keeping in mind that the living God lives among us. That is our focus.

I have also heard more than one person tell me that they are tired of the snow. I know I will spend some of my prayer time praying for “favorable weather”!

Peace,

Pastor Katie

Dear Friends in Christ,

This is a time to reflect on changes.  That God’s love for this world, even to us as particular and peculiar beings, should be so profound as to bring about “Word made Flesh” is perhaps as big a change as our history has seen.

On a bit smaller scale, our work and lives here in Tanzania are headed for major change.  I had sent a letter recently to our supporting churches, describing the changes in ELCA Global Mission and also U.S. government funding changes; these changes are sobering in that they reflect a direct lessening of available resources for the work at hand.  In the case of our 13 hospital programs supported by those U.S. funds, it means the transitioning from large support to small support, with each site having different other partnerships of varying capacities.  The amount of work in facilitating these transitions is dizzying, and it is all a part of the 3 months after December.  Yet that is the nature of this work, to have funding highs and lows, taking the opportunities that each presents in order to be best positioned to keep serving those who need our care.

Another change has to do with our family; next summer marks Nathan’s graduation from high school in Kenya, with plans to attend college in the U.S.  Heidi finishes her teaching time in Slovakia and looks forward to beginning medical school. And!  We are looking forward to a July wedding in Alaska – Kirsten and Ray.  What Rebecca and I have discerned, amidst these many family and vocation variables, is that it is also time for us to transition back to the U.S.  Thus we would be leaving Tanzania by July, though staying on with ELCA likely through the end of the year with our big responsibilities being visiting our supporting churches again (in a more sedate fashion than usual) and, of course, finding a new place and space for vocation.

At this point, we look to land somewhere that will allow a continuation of the many, many connections and history of these nearly seven years in Tanzania.  How that will shape up remains to be seen though we trust that possibilities will be good ones.

In Advent season, expectation and preparation are joyful themes.  Sometimes, though, that preparation can be a lot of work.  As we see or expect Christ to manifest in our lives, there may be a lot of personal and family preparation that is a part of it.  We give thanks for the opportunities, for what has been, and for what we trust will be.

Gratefully,

Kristopher and Rebecca

Thank you to everyone who brought in items during Advent to Hayward for the food shelf and for the mitten tree. The food shelf at First Presbyterian church in Albert Lea received 181 lbs. of food and $250 cash, and the Salvation Army received 23 pairs of gloves, 3 pairs of mittens, 25 stocking caps, 3 scarves, and 1 pair of baby shoes. Your donations will go a long way toward keeping folks in the area fed and warm!

Sunday Night Live! begins again on January 9 and will run through the end of February. We start out with a free meal for all at 5:30 p.m. followed by songs, Bible stories, crafts and games for children. Hope to see many of you there!
