THE PARISH NEWS

HAYWARD-TRONDHJEM LUTHERAN PARISH

June 2011

From Pastor Katie:

Come, Holy Spirit, come!

Blessings to our graduating seniors: Kadie Habana, Mic Skaar, Logan Tufte, and our pianist, Alex Knoll. You are all ending and beginning an exciting new phase in life, and you have the support and prayers of your church family.

June begins the season of Pentecost, the season of the Holy Spirit. Pentecost is on Sunday, June 12, and we will be having a worship service of readings and hymns focused on the Holy Spirit. It is the day we celebrate the Holy Spirit coming upon the disciples as Jesus had promised, and they are able to speak the Good News of Jesus Christ to people from many nations in many languages. I encourage all of you to wear red, the color symbolizing the Holy Spirit. One pastor I know wears red cowboy boots on Pentecost, but sadly, I do not own a pair. If you do, we’d love to see them!

We are also going to be letting the Holy Spirit speak to us through some parts of the Bible you might not have heard in church before. We normally read Bible passages that go by the “lectionary” – readings that are picked out for each Sunday and are on a three-year cycle. So every three years you hear the same Bible stories. This is a wonderful way to get the sweep of the Bible story, but it does mean some things are left out. During the long time after Pentecost in the church year (it will stretch from end of June to October on our calendar, but it has been in the past even longer) the lectionary also offers alternative Bible readings from the Old Testament, passages that are not normally read. We will be reading those this summer, and I hope to preach on many of them as we get to know these stories in our Book of Faith.

A Bible study will also be offered for those who would like to explore these stories before we get to them on Sunday mornings. Beginning June 23, there will be a Bible study on Thursday mornings at 10 a.m. in Hayward, all through the rest of the summer (except when I am on vacation in July, though y’all are certainly welcome to meet) and into the fall as well look at some of these lesser-known Bible passages. I look forward to learning about and discussing these stories with you in a creative and fun way.

On a different subject: pastors are given two weeks of continuing education time each year. This is especially important for new pastors, as we get out into the parish and discover all the things we have yet to learn! I asked when we were doing budget planning for this year that my continuing education budget be increased rather than my base pay, which is what was done. As a result there is a course in June that I will be taking that will be very valuable: a mini-MBA program for pastors offered through Luther Seminary and Augsburg College in Minneapolis. The week-long residential course is a program in leadership and management fundamentals specifically for clergy, dealing with church budget processes, facilities maintenance, long –term and strategic planning, personnel management, church promotion, personal leadership and creativity. Though no pastor does anything alone, I think this course is helpful for any solo pastor, especially a new one. I hope later in the year to do some education that focuses more on preaching, teaching, and pastoral care, but this is a great all-round administrative course for pastors and I’m excited to go – it will be beneficial to me and our parish. The course is Sunday, June 12 (checking in during the evening) through Friday, June 17. Pastor Bob knows these dates and will cover for me while I am gone.

I am excited to see what this summer will bring, what the Holy Spirit has in mind for all of us. Come, Holy Spirit, come!

Peace,

Pastor Katie
