March 2011

From Pastor Katie:

By Faith: A Lenten Journey

Ash Wednesday: March 9, 2011 Worship with Holy Communion at 7:00 p.m. in Hayward

Studying those who have walked by faith:

Sunday nights at 7 p.m. in Hayward, March 13 – April 10

Living our faith:

Wednesday nights in Hayward, March 16 – April 13

            Meal at 6:00 p.m., Worship at 7:00 p.m.

In March the season of Lent begins, a season of repentance and reflection, a season of study and prayer and togetherness. This year’s theme for Lent is “By Faith,” focusing on Hebrews 11:1: “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” Hebrews 11 has several examples from the Bible of what it means to live by faith.

Each week (beginning March 13) on Sunday nights for Bible study we will be looking at the faith of different biblical characters: Noah, Abraham, Moses, the people of Israel, and Jesus. It will be fun and informal. Then on Wednesday nights (beginning March 16) we will have meals together, have a service based on the Holden Evening Prayer service (if you don’t know it, it has beautiful music, and is one of my favorites) and a short reflection from Hebrews on what it meant for each of these characters – from Noah to Jesus – to live by faith, and how we can live by faith here and now.

I look forward to walking with all of you on this Lenten journey of faith. I hope to see many of you not only for Sunday worship, but on Sunday nights for Bible study and Wednesday evenings for food, fellowship, and worship.

Lent is often called a “busy” time for pastors, but I love it, because we are doing things that I love – reading and talking about the Bible, talking about our faith, singing beautiful music, and of course, eating (I love food). I am excited to share this time with all of you. Grace and peace to you all.

Peace,

Pastor Katie

Thank you to everyone who participated in Sunday Night Live! A special thanks to all the units who served, and to the Children's Ministry Team for providing leadership: Carolyn Matson, Bonnie Felt, Cammie Tennis, Sue Skaar, Cheyenne Walton, Jeff Englin, Alice Englin, Steve Tufte, and Diane Martinez. We averaged 6 children a Sunday, down from our fall numbers, but the children that came loved it and loved the church. I also heard several comments about how fun it was to have not only children but parents and grandparents participating as well. It has been a joy to see families have relaxing time together and rewarding to see children learning songs and stories from the Bible. While I do not know what the future holds for children and family ministry in Hayward, I am excited by the faith generated by Sunday Night Live! Blessings to you all.

Peace,
Pastor Katie
