THE PARISH NEWS

HAYWARD-TRONDHJEM LUTHERAN PARISH

May 2011

From Pastor Katie:

Happy May! Congratulations to our confirmation students who will be confirmed on May 1st: Anna Englin, Emily Brekke, Anna Severtson, and Madalyn Wangen.

May is a time when we begin to look toward the summer. Summer is seen as a “quieter” time in the church, but I hope that our congregations will be buzzing with Bible studies and youth activities, Vacation Bible School and lively worship.

I have noticed over the past few months that there have been some questions popping up – for example, many people have been wondering about Sunday Night Live! and what activities we will be offering for children. Now that Easter is over I will be contacting the Children’s Ministry Team to talk about Sunday Night Live! and its joys and challenges, and we will be making decisions on how to move forward to best serve our fellow members of the body of Christ who are younger than most of us.

Sunday Night Live! attracted 5-10 children regularly when we had it in January and February. Mostly those children were 6 years old and younger, with a few second and third graders. The advantage of having our programming at night and serving a meal is that we get to eat together (always a joy) and parents don’t have to worry about a meal. I am also able to attend as Hayward’s children’s time is not on Sunday mornings when I am at Trondhjem, so I can bond with the children, which has been a joy. Rather than separating kids from their families for an education hour, we are all able to interact as one group in the fellowship hall, children and parents and grandparents and other adults. We sing the songs together, we tell the Bible stories and play games together, and we make crafts together. It is really family time as much as children’s time. It is a beautiful thing.

There are also disadvantages to Sunday nights. It is that it is an extra trip for families to make to church if they also come Sunday mornings – although there are families we saw on Sunday night are not in church Sunday morning, for a variety of reasons. During the winter it can seem less appealing to go out on those cold winter nights, which is part of why our numbers were lower in January and February than they were in the fall.

However the congregation chooses to move forward with our children’s ministry, we will need dedicated people excited to spend time with and share faith with our children (and they in turn share their faith with adults, which is fun). As we watch the earth reawaken, the sun warm us and things begin to blossom and grow, it is a reminder of how we all can blossom and grow in our faith. Some of us just need a little more help getting water and sunlight than others.

Peace,

Pastor Katie

The Faith Healer

Ambilikile Mwasapile is a retired Lutheran pastor in a remote corner of Northern Tanzania.  But today he is – by far – the most famous person in the whole country.  He claims that for the past 20 years he has had a vision from God telling him to concoct a certain brew and then use it treat any number of chronic, incurable ailments.  Finally, late last year, he responded to the vision.  As one senior pastor told me last week, it was like the Samaritan woman at the well, who ran back to her village shouting about what an amazing thing had happened to her at the well (meeting Jesus).  Likewise, people have come back from this area called Loliondo shouting and proclaiming miraculous cures.  The effect?  The phenomenon is now in its fourth month.  The old man, who is affectionately referred to as “Babu”, or grandfather, works all day long, every day, serving out individual cups of the broth.  Anywhere from two to three thousand people get served every day.  The line of vehicles awaiting their turn had topped out at 50 kilometers, though now the government has taken measures to stem the tide.  Roads to the area are rough and now muddy.  It can take from 5 to 7 days to get from the end of the line to the front.  Dozens of people have died in the process.  Environmental hygiene is abysmal.

The testimonials of healing are innumerable, literally.  Asthmatics, diabetics, people with cancer, even people with HIV, are claiming to be healed.  Reputable medical colleagues have seen amazing changes even though it is early to make a medical pronouncement on cures for such conditions.  Babu does not expressly tell people to stop medications.  In fact when interviewed he suggests people continue on whatever they are taking until advised otherwise by their doctors.  However, many, many people stop anyway, weary of the cost of pills and caught up in the huge sense of well-being which many seem to gain after drinking their dose.  Where does such credibility come from?  “Miracle cures” have always been with us.  Maybe it is the very special mix that is this situation:  an old man of faith, clearly not out to make personal money; the use of medicinal herbs in the brew, in a culture which respects the traditional herbal approach; a charge of 500 shillings (about 30 cents) levied to all comers, and he refuses larger payments (and repeat doses); and prayer, which he offers over each batch of the mix.  He says that his vision also told him to make this healing medicine available to all who want it regardless of their faith or belief.

I have been asked:  do you even have any more Hospice patients, now that everyone has run to see Babu?  As for that, most people cannot get there, the cost and rigor of travel is too much.  Those who can, do, including the President of Tanzania (who is Muslim) and many other top officials.  Many Lutheran Bishops have also gone and partaken from what is being called “the cup of life”.

Amidst the euphoria of such healings and happenings, there is definitely another side.  Hospitalizations seem to be on the rise due to people going off of critical medicines like insulin. And what about HIV?  If people stop medicines, the likelihood of becoming much worse in the next several months is huge.  Will it spark a public health disaster?  Or remain a beacon of hope in an otherwise difficult life and health environment for all?  Being here, we can only set aside our skepticism for now and join in the hope.  And somehow, this cup which for many is a blessing, being offered to all who want it, is such a reminder of God’s grace.  Though we might not deserve it, or have faith enough, healing within that grace is offered to all of us.

Kristopher and Rebecca Hartwig

Dear Friends,

As we have written before, we are coming up on our final months in Tanzania.  By August we will have "settled", at least temporarily, in the Missionary Apartments in St. Paul MN.

It is still our desire to share with you our experiences and hopes, and we anticipate being able to do a number of church visits.  Very roughly, here is what the schedule looks like:

August in MN area

September in NY/PA area

October/early November in MN area

In total we have over 40 supporting churches, so - as usual - it may be challenging to visit all of you.  Even so, let us know your preference for timing and so forth, so that we can begin to organize the time.  As usual we will be equipped to participate in worship service time as well as weekday times (mornings, evenings, whenever).

Looking forward to hearing from you,

In Christ,

Kristopher and Rebecca Hartwig

There is a worship time change beginning Sunday, May 29 -- worship at Trondhjem at 8:30 and at Hayward at 10:00.

May 2011

To Whom It May Concern:

We are planning a fundraiser lunch for the Hayward Cemetery Association, that will be held on May 28,2011. We hope you will be able to attend.

We’re spending a lot of money for upkeep of our cemetery. Last year, we spent about $3000.00 in taking care of the cemetery. This includes gas, wages, lawn mower expense, blades for the mower, landscaping, weed prevention, and other things that we need for our cemetery upkeep.

We have not held a fundraiser before, but now due to the expenses that we have, this will probably be a yearly event. The fundraiser will be held on May 28, 2011 from 11 :00 A.M. to 2: P.M. It will be held at the Hayward Lutheran Church. We will serve pulled pork sandwiches, beans, potato salad, coffee and lemonade.

There will be a free will donation. If you are in the area, please stop and help us keep the cemetery looking nice. Checks should be made out to the Hayward Cemetery.

If you are unable to be there, please consider sending a donation to:

Dan Johnson

79678 180th Street Albert Lea, MN. 56007

Thank you very much for your prompt attention to this request.
