THE PARISH NEWS

HAYWARD-TRONDHJEM LUTHERAN PARISH

November 2011

From Pastor Katie:

“Toto, I have a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore.”

Most people know this quote from The Wizard of Oz. I know all the people in my family do. Sometimes people even use it in their daily lives, when they encounter a strange place or a new situation. It’s familiar. Somehow we all know who Toto is, and Kansas. Alone the phrase doesn’t have much meaning, but if you know the story, it makes sense.

In October I attended the Book of Faith Networking Consultation (a boring title, I know) at the ELCA headquarters in Chicago. I am the new advocate for the Book of Faith Initiative here in our synod – a churchwide initiative where the goal is simply for Lutherans to open scripture and join in conversation. It is a movement for Lutherans to know the story of God that is in the Bible, and to see it as their story.

Why do this? One of the speakers at the conference, David Lose, talked about how most people today do not see God as a primary actor in the story of their lives. Think of it this way: is it easy to answer the question, ‘What is God doing in my life today?’ One of the reasons it can be hard to see God in our everyday lives is that we don’t know stories of the way God has been present in people’s lives since the beginning of creation. God and people have a deep and abiding relationship in the Bible.  It is a collection of books written by people struggling to understand their lives and how God works in them. When we know Biblical stories, we can start to see the patterns of how God works in people’s lives. We can also start to see the patterns of how God works in our lives. This is what happens when we know the stories of the Bible, when they become a part of us in a deep way.

To put it another way, the goal of the Book of Faith Initiative is for the Bible to become as familiar to folks as Toto and Dorothy. For many people they already are – whether it is people who are going through many hardships feeling “like Job” or seeing a wayward child in a family as the “prodigal son” to be welcomed home. The Bible can seem at times to be confusing, strange, boring, and hard to read. That’s why we don’t just read it alone. It is our book of faith, the story of things God has done in the lives of people since the beginning of the world. It is one of my goals as a pastor to help people simply know the story.

God’s peace,

Pastor Katie

WOULD YOU LIKE TO CONTRIBUTE FRESH FLOWERS?

Fresh flowers for the altar are a beautiful addition to our worship service.  If you wish to furnish flowers, all you need to do is call the Altar Guild president, Marlene Thompson (373-3895).  The Guild will purchase and display the flowers for you, and if you wish, will put an acknowledgement in the Sunday bulletin.  Cost of the flowers is usually about $20.  Your generosity and support are greatly appreciated.  Thank you.
